Digitalis purpurea Mix – A Classic Cottage Garden Favourite with Towering Elegance

Digitalis purpurea Mix, commonly known as Common Foxglove, is a timeless biennial or short-lived perennial celebrated for its majestic spires of bell-shaped blooms in a romantic mix of purples, pinks, whites, and soft creams. Rising high above lush rosettes of textured green foliage, these iconic flower spikes bring height, drama, and a nostalgic charm to cottage gardens, wildlife borders, and shady planting schemes. Highly attractive to bees, especially long-tongued species, this mix is a valuable source of nectar and an essential feature in pollinator-friendly landscapes.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

Spring:

  • Rosettes of soft, textured green leaves emerge, forming a strong base.

  • In the second year (for biennials), tall flowering stems begin to rise.

Summer:

  • From late spring to midsummer, stately vertical spikes burst into bloom, each densely packed with tubular, bell-like flowers.

  • Colour range includes deep magenta, lilac, pink, cream, and white, often with charming speckled throats.

  • A magnet for bees and perfect for shady borders or woodland edges.

Autumn:

  • As flowering finishes, seed pods develop if not deadheaded.

  • Foliage may remain green until frosts, helping retain structure.

Winter:

  • Dies back in cold climates but may remain semi-evergreen in milder areas.

  • Allow some seedheads to remain for naturalising and self-seeding.

Structure & Form

  • Height: 100–150 cm (can reach up to 180 cm in ideal conditions)

  • Spread: 40–50 cm

  • Habit: Upright, with bold vertical flower spikes rising from basal rosettes

  • Foliage: Downy green leaves with a soft, slightly toothed edge

  • Flowers: Tubular, pendant blooms with speckled throats, spiralling up the stems in a range of colours

  • Growth Rate: Fast – blooms in second year when grown from seed

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Cottage Gardens: A staple for traditional, romantic planting schemes.

  • Woodland Borders: Thrives in part-shade with dappled light.

  • Wildlife Gardens: A favourite of bees, especially in early summer.

  • Naturalised Areas: Self-seeds readily, bringing a wild, effortless charm.

  • Back of Borders: Provides vertical contrast and soft colour variation.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Prefers partial shade but tolerates full sun with moisture.

  • Soil: Moist, fertile, well-drained soil; dislikes waterlogged roots.

  • Watering: Water during dry spells, especially in the first year.

  • Hardiness: RHS H7 – very hardy throughout the UK.

  • Maintenance: Deadhead to prolong flowering and prevent unwanted self-seeding, or leave some heads to encourage natural spread.

  • Lifespan: Biennial (flowers in year two); may self-seed and establish ongoing displays.

⚠️ Note: All parts of Digitalis are toxic if ingested. Handle with care and keep away from pets and children.

Why Choose Digitalis purpurea Mix?

  • Bold, Classic Beauty: Elegant spires that capture the spirit of traditional English gardens.

  • Wide Colour Range: A soft, natural palette that suits almost any planting scheme.

  • Pollinator Magnet: Especially important for bees and other nectar-seekers.

  • Effortless Charm: Readily self-seeds for low-maintenance, long-term displays.

  • Versatile Use: From wild gardens to formal designs, it’s both beautiful and adaptable.

Perfect Plant Combinations

  • With Ferns or Hostas: Softens the upright form with leafy texture.

  • With Astrantia or Geraniums: Layered effect in part-shade borders.

  • With Campanula or Delphinium: Enhances verticality in early summer borders.

  • With Poppies or Cornflowers: For naturalised, wildflower-style meadows.
