Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata' (Arizona Cypress) – A Strikingly Upright, Silver-Blue Evergreen Conifer with Bold Architectural Character

Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata', a fastigiate form of the Arizona Cypress, is a commanding and distinctly architectural evergreen conifer that brings a sense of drama, structure, and year-round interest to the garden. Renowned for its strongly columnar, pencil-slim silhouette and striking blue-grey to silver-green foliage, this cultivar stands as one of the most visually arresting conifers available for temperate gardens. Its intensely upright habit makes it an ideal choice for formal avenues, punctuating mixed borders with bold vertical emphasis, or providing tall, narrow screening where space is limited. Hardy, drought-tolerant once established, and refreshingly unfussy, Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata' is a thoroughly reliable and visually distinguished addition to a wide range of garden styles, from contemporary and minimalist designs to traditional and Mediterranean-inspired planting schemes.

Habit & Appearance

Strongly fastigiate, columnar form. Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata' develops a very narrow, tightly upright column, maintaining a disciplined and slender silhouette throughout its life. This emphatically vertical habit is one of its most defining and desirable characteristics, providing a clean, bold architectural line that draws the eye upward and lends structure and height to plantings without consuming significant ground space. It is well suited to formal and contemporary settings where precision of form is a priority, and equally effective when planted in groups or avenues to create a sense of rhythm and enclosure.

Silver-blue to blue-grey foliage. The fine, scale-like leaves are carried in dense, overlapping sprays of a cool silver-blue to blue-grey tone, giving the plant a distinctive and highly ornamental appearance that sets it apart from the majority of green-foliaged conifers. This cool, frosted colouring is retained throughout all four seasons, providing consistent tonal interest and offering a beautiful contrast against both warm-toned plantings and darker evergreen backdrops. The aromatic foliage carries a fresh, resinous fragrance when disturbed, adding a further sensory dimension to the planting.

Year-round evergreen presence. As a fully evergreen conifer, 'Fastigiata' maintains its ornamental value in every season, offering reliable structure, colour, and texture even through the depths of winter when much of the garden has retreated into dormancy. Its strong vertical form becomes particularly valuable in winter, providing a striking focal point and a sense of life and permanence at the most challenging time of year.

Growing Conditions

Position. Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata' thrives in a position of full sun and performs at its best when given unrestricted access to direct light throughout the day. Ample sunlight promotes the densest, most compact foliage growth and brings out the full intensity of the silver-blue colouring. It is exceptionally well suited to hot, open, and exposed positions, and shows excellent tolerance of drought, heat, and wind once established. Its origins in the arid landscapes of the American Southwest make it naturally predisposed to sunny, dry conditions, and it is a particularly sound choice for gardens in warmer, drier regions or those seeking plants with genuine resilience in challenging exposures.

Soil. This cultivar is broadly adaptable and will grow in a wide range of soil types, including poor, sandy, or stony ground that would challenge many other ornamental trees. It performs best in well-drained to freely draining soils with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, but will tolerate moderately acidic conditions without difficulty. Good drainage is essential — prolonged waterlogging or consistently wet, heavy ground is the one condition this cypress is least suited to and should be avoided. Once established, 'Fastigiata' is notably drought-tolerant and well adapted to periods of dry weather.

Hardiness. Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata' is a reliably hardy conifer, well suited to the majority of the UK and similar temperate climates. It copes well with cold winters and is generally more frost-hardy than many other cypress species, making it a sound choice for inland gardens as well as milder and coastal locations. Young plants in their first season of establishment may benefit from protection against particularly severe frost or desiccating winter winds until they have developed a robust root system.

Care & Pruning

Watering. Water regularly during the first growing season after planting to help Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata' settle in and develop a strong, extensive root system. Once well established, it is a genuinely drought-tolerant tree that requires only supplementary watering during prolonged dry spells. Avoid overwatering or allowing water to sit around the root zone, as excess moisture is far more likely to cause problems than occasional dryness for this naturally arid-climate species.

Pruning. The naturally tight, upright habit of 'Fastigiata' means that significant pruning is rarely necessary to maintain its columnar form. Light trimming in late spring or early summer can be carried out to remove any dead, damaged, or wayward growth and to refine the outline where a particularly crisp formal shape is desired. As with all cypress species, avoid cutting back hard into old, bare wood, as the plant has limited capacity to regenerate from mature, leafless stems and hard pruning can result in permanent bare patches within the canopy.

Feeding. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth, particularly during the establishment years. Once fully settled, 'Fastigiata' is an undemanding tree in terms of nutrition and will thrive in relatively poor soils with only modest supplementary feeding. An annual spring application
