× Cupressocyparis leylandii (Leyland Cypress) –

× Cupressocyparis leylandii, universally known as the Leyland Cypress, is Britain's most popular evergreen conifer. Its soft, feathery, rich green foliage.

Key Features

Dense, Evergreen Foliage – Rich, mid-green feathery sprays provide continuous, year-round coverage and remain lush and full through even the harshest winter months.

Versatility – Equally at home as a formal clipped hedge, a tall privacy screen, or a substantial shelterbelt, Leyland Cypress adapts readily to a wide range of garden situations and scales.

Fully Hardy – Tolerant of a broad range of conditions, it thrives throughout the UK, coping well with coastal exposure, urban pollution, and periods of dry weather once established.

Growing Conditions

Position: Full sun to partial shade. Leyland Cypress performs well in a wide range of aspects, though open, sunny positions encourage the most vigorous and dense growth.

Soil: Adaptable to most well-drained soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It tolerates slightly acidic through to neutral conditions and establishes readily even in poorer ground, provided drainage is reasonable.

Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the British Isles. Particularly tolerant of coastal winds and urban environments, making it one of the most reliably tough screening plants available.

Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to support establishment. Once settled, Leyland Cypress is reasonably drought tolerant, though a thorough soak during prolonged dry spells will help maintain vigorous, healthy growth.

Care & Pruning

Pruning: To keep Leyland Cypress as a neat, manageable hedge, trim one to two times per year — ideally once in late spring and again in late summer. This controls both height and width and encourages a denser, more uniform habit. Avoid cutting back hard into old, brown wood, as Leyland Cypress does not readily regenerate from bare stems; always retain some green foliage on each shoot when trimming.

Mulching: Applying a layer of organic mulch around the base each spring helps conserve moisture, suppress competing weeds, and gradually improves soil fertility — particularly beneficial in the early years after planting.

Fertilising: A balanced, slow-release fertiliser applied in early spring will support strong growth, especially on poorer soils or where plants are establishing in a competitive planting scheme.

Plant Combinations

× Cupressocyparis leylandii works beautifully alongside other evergreens such as Thuja occidentalis, Taxus baccata, or Prunus laurocerasus in mixed shelter or boundary planting. Its deep green foliage provides an excellent backdrop for flowering shrubs including Camellia, Viburnum, and Rosa, allowing blossom and colour to stand out dramatically against the dense, neutral hedge. For a classic formal garden effect, plant in a straight line and maintain as a clipped green wall to frame lawns, borders, or garden rooms with elegant, architectural precision.

Whether you need an effective screen in a hurry, reliable shelter from prevailing winds, or a clean green boundary that can be maintained to any height, × Cupressocyparis leylandii delivers fast, dependable results with minimal fuss — a true workhorse of the British garden.
