Why Grow Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ (Red Twig Dogwood)?
Vibrant Winter Stems – The standout feature of this shrub is its striking red stems, which provide bright, eye-catching colour in winter when many plants are dormant.
Year-Round Interest – With small, creamy-white flowers in late spring, followed by deep red and purple autumn foliage, this shrub offers beauty through every season.
Hardy & Low-Maintenance – Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ is tough, resilient, and easy to maintain, making it perfect for gardeners seeking a reliable, seasonal interest plant.
Wildlife-Friendly – The flowers attract pollinators like bees, and the berries provide food for birds in the autumn and winter months.
Sun-Loving & Versatile – Thrives in full sun to partial shade, adapting well to a variety of garden settings, including borders, hedges, or as a specimen plant.
Planting & Care Guide
Position – Prefers full sun to partial shade. Best planted in sunny borders, woodland edges, or as a hedge, where its vibrant winter stems can be fully appreciated.
Soil – Thrives in well-drained, moist, moderately fertile soil. While adaptable to most soil types, it does best in slightly acidic to neutral conditions.
Watering – Water regularly during the growing season to maintain moist soil. Once established, Red Twig Dogwood is relatively drought-tolerant but performs better with consistent moisture.
Maintenance:
-
Pruning – To maintain vibrant red stems, cut back a third of the stems in early spring before new growth begins. This encourages the growth of new red stems, ensuring the shrub retains its eye-catching winter colour.
-
Deadheading – While not essential, removing spent flowers in early summer can improve the plant’s appearance and prevent self-seeding.
-
Mulching – Apply mulch in spring to retain moisture, protect roots, and improve soil quality.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ pairs beautifully with other plants that offer contrasting textures and colours. For a vibrant winter display, combine it with evergreen shrubs like Boxwood, Holly, or Yew, which provide a rich green backdrop to the striking red stems. In autumn, the plant’s purple-red foliage works well with golden grasses, such as Miscanthus, or vibrant perennials like Asters and Echinacea. For a more natural look, combine with ornamental grasses or other deciduous shrubs, creating a dynamic landscape with a range of seasonal colours and textures.
