Carpinus Betulus Pleached

Pleached Hornbeam

These splendid trees are celebrated for lush green serrated leaves, forming an impenetrable screen that bestows privacy, security, and an effective shield against noise and wind upon your garden.

Carpinus Betulus also known as Hornbeam is a tradtional tree that is under valued. It is a natural beauty, they are dense well branched conical crowns that as they mature the structure rounds. They are slow growing. In spring the foliage is a sudden burst of bright green, the leaf itself is serrated and tapers to a point. In autumn they change to a soft yellow before the golden brown we often see. The tree holds the brown coppery leaves for most of the winter. Giving an almost evegreen look, before the drop off. The greyish brown bark is a lovely smooth trunk. Making it ideal for turning into standard or pleahed trees as well. Carpinus can reach between 15/25m.

Carpinus is an excellent choice for inviting wildlife into the garden, they are an excellent source for moths and catrpillars, the green catkins develop into fruits that birds eat.

Hornbeam are resliant trees that once estbalished can tolerate poor soils, such as clay and chalk. In sun or partial shade.

The Carpinus Betulus Pleached, commonly known as the Hornbeam Pleached, is a sophisticated and eye-catching addition to any garden or landscape. This topiary is renowned for its elegant, formal structure, featuring a meticulously trained form with a neatly trimmed, elevated canopy that adds both refinement and privacy to your outdoor space. The Hornbeam’s vibrant green leaves provide a lush backdrop that turns a golden hue in autumn before falling.

Where to Position Your Carpinus Betulus Pleached

The Carpinus Betulus Pleached performs best in locations with full sun to partial shade. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soil, which helps prevent waterlogging that can harm the roots. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, to maintain the foliage's health and vibrancy. This topiary is ideal for creating structured hedges, screens, or decorative elements in various garden settings.

Growth and Pruning

Typically, the Carpinus Betulus Pleached grows to a height of about 6-8 feet, with a similar spread. Its distinctive shape is achieved through careful training and pruning. To maintain its neat appearance, regular pruning is necessary. Trim the topiary to preserve its formal shape and remove dead or damaged branches. The best time for a thorough trim is late winter or early spring, with additional touch-ups required throughout the growing season to keep the canopy well-defined.
