Camellia Japonica Marie Bracey 7 Litre Pot

Camellia japonica ‘Marie Bracey’ is a stunning Japanese camellia cultivar prized for its large, showy blooms and glossy evergreen foliage. This variety is known for its delicate pink flowers and graceful growth habit

1. Flowers

  • Form: Large, semi-double blooms with a lush, layered appearance. The petals are slightly ruffled, creating a soft and romantic look.
  • Color: Soft, pastel pink petals, often with subtle shading or deeper tones toward the center.
  • Blooming Season: Flowers appear in late winter to early spring, adding vibrant color during a quiet time in the garden.

2. Foliage

  • Leaves: Evergreen, glossy, and dark green, providing a striking contrast to the delicate flowers.
  • Shape: Oval-shaped with finely serrated edges, characteristic of camellias.
  • Year-round interest due to its dense, lush foliage.

3. Growth Habit

  • Size: Grows to a height of 1.5–3 meters (5–10 feet) and a spread of around 1.5–2 meters (5–6 feet), depending on growing conditions.
  • Form: Bushy and upright, with a symmetrical, compact structure.

Planting and Growing Requirements

1. Preferred Conditions

  • Soil: Acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–6.5), rich in organic matter, well-drained, and moist.
    • For alkaline soils, use ericaceous compost or plant in containers.
  • Light: Thrives in partial shade, avoiding direct midday sun, which can scorch leaves or fade blooms.
  • Location: Sheltered areas, such as near a wall or hedge, protect against frost and strong winds.

2. Planting Time

  • Best planted in autumn or early spring to give the plant time to establish.

3. Fertilizing

  • Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving plants in spring, just after flowering.
  • Avoid overfeeding, as it can lead to leaf burn or excessive foliage growth at the expense of flower

  • Ornamental Feature:
    • A beautiful standalone shrub for gardens or patios, adding elegance with its soft pink blooms.
  • Hedges and Screens:
    • Dense foliage makes it suitable for sheltered evergreen hedges.
  • Containers:
    • Ideal for patios, balconies, or small gardens when planted in pots.
  • Companion Planting:
    • Combines well with other acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas, and pieris.

Camellia japonica ‘Marie Bracey’ is a stunning Japanese camellia cultivar prized for its large, showy blooms and glossy evergreen foliage. This variety is known for its delicate pink flowers and graceful growth habit,

Uses and Applications

  • Specimen Plant: Ideal as a focal point in shaded gardens or patio containers.
  • Hedges and Borders: Compact growth makes it suitable for creating a natural, evergreen screen.
  • Containers: Thrives in pots with ericaceous compost, perfect for patios or small spaces.
  • Winter Interest: Provides color and structure during the colder months.

1. Preferred Conditions

  • Soil: Acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–6.5), moist, and well-drained. Avoid chalky soils unless amended with ericaceous compost.
  • Light: Partial shade is ideal, especially to protect flowers from harsh midday sun or frost damage.
  • Location: Plant in a sheltered spot, away from strong winds and morning sun (to prevent frost-damaged buds from thawing too quickly).

2. Planting Tips

  • Time: Best planted in autumn or early spring.
  • Method:
    1. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball.
    2. Add ericaceous compost to improve soil acidity.
    3. Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface.
    4. Water thoroughly and mulch around the base with bark or leaf mold to retain moisture.

3. Watering

  • Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during dry periods.
  • Avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot.

4. Feeding

  • Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants (e.g., rhododendrons or azaleas) in spring.

5. Pruning

  • Minimal pruning required; remove dead or damaged branches after flowering.
  • Light shaping can be done to maintain a neat form.
