Calycanthus ‘Aphrodite’ – Exotic Blooms with a Fragrant Twist
Calycanthus × raulstonii ‘Aphrodite’ is a head-turning shrub that combines long-lasting colour with a gentle, fruity fragrance. Its most captivating feature is its large, lotus-like flowers in a deep wine-red shade, each petal unfurling in layers to reveal a subtle yellow centre. Blooming generously from early summer right through to autumn, it provides a show of colour when many shrubs are past their peak.
The foliage is equally attractive – glossy and deep green, forming a lush backdrop that sets off the vibrant blooms. In autumn, the leaves often take on soft golden tones before falling. The fragrance is light and sweet, with hints of ripe fruit, adding to its appeal in seating areas or along paths where it can be enjoyed up close.
‘Aphrodite’ is easy to grow in well-drained soil, preferring a sunny or lightly shaded position. It’s tolerant of a wide range of conditions and requires little pruning, making it a low-maintenance yet highly rewarding choice. Whether as a specimen in the lawn, a statement in a mixed border, or a focal point in a courtyard, this shrub delivers season after season.
