Buddleja davidii ‘Lochinch’ – A Refined Butterfly Magnet with Silvery Foliage

Buddleja davidii ‘Lochinch’, commonly known as the Butterfly Bush, is a stunning deciduous shrub renowned for its long, arching panicles of fragrant lilac-blue flowers and distinctive silver-grey foliage. A favourite among pollinators, this variety not only brings rich colour and heady fragrance to the garden but also serves as a vital nectar source for butterflies and bees.

‘Lochinch’ stands out for its elegant habit and cooler-toned blooms, making it perfect for mixed borders, wildlife gardens, or as a specimen plant in more formal settings. With its long flowering period and graceful appearance, this Buddleja delivers both performance and beauty.

Why Grow Buddleja davidii ‘Lochinch’?

Long, Fragrant Flower Spikes
Produces elegant, tapered panicles of soft lavender-blue flowers with orange eyes, blooming from mid-summer into early autumn.

Attractive Silver-Grey Foliage
The narrow, felted leaves offer a unique silvery tone that contrasts beautifully with the flowers and enhances overall garden texture.

Loved by Pollinators
A true magnet for butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects – ideal for wildlife-friendly gardens and naturalistic planting.

Compact and Manageable Growth
More restrained than some other Buddleja varieties, ‘Lochinch’ typically reaches around 1.5–2.5m tall, making it suitable for smaller spaces.

Low-Maintenance and Drought-Tolerant
Once established, it requires little care beyond annual pruning and copes well with dry, sunny locations.

Where to Grow Buddleja davidii ‘Lochinch’

  • In mixed or shrub borders for a splash of late-season colour

  • As a focal point in wildlife or pollinator gardens

  • In Mediterranean or drought-tolerant planting schemes

  • In sunny courtyard gardens or south-facing beds

How to Grow and Care for Buddleja davidii ‘Lochinch’

Soil – Thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil; tolerates poor or dry conditions once established.

Light – Requires full sun to flower profusely and maintain compact growth.

Watering – Water regularly during the first season; drought-tolerant thereafter.

Pruning – Prune hard in early spring to encourage fresh growth and maximise flowering.

Feeding – Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring to boost bloom production.

Buddleja davidii ‘Lochinch’ offers the perfect blend of elegance and ecological value. With its subtle silver foliage and richly hued flowers, this compact variety creates a stunning focal point while supporting vital pollinator populations.
