From Plants for Clay Soil

Berberis or Barberries are deciduous, mound-forming shrubs. They have bright attractive foliage and bear small red to yellow berries in Autumn. Berberis have plenty of thorns so are commonly used as a security hedge.

Barberry shrubs range in size from dwarf species suitable for rock gardens to larger specimens which are ideal for a shrub border. They are very easy to grow and maintain and respond very well to being trimmed.

Berberis should be trimmed after flowering to maintain a neat shape. They are fully hardy shrubs which grow well in most well-drained soils. Compact, evergreen, arching shrub.

Berberis Admiration is a deciduous, dwarf shrub with striking leaf colouring. Foliage is glowing orange-red with each leaf developing a thin golden-yellow marginal ring in summer, the colours deepen for autumn. Yellow flowers in late spring followed by red berries. Height reaches up to 50cm

Slow Growing

Berberis Admiration is a captivating deciduous shrub known for its striking foliage and compact form. Its leaves start as a deep purple and transition to a vibrant red with golden-yellow edges in summer, creating a stunning visual effect. To create a larger and thicker spread hedge, plant 3/4 per meter.

Where Should I Site My Berberis Admiration?

Berberis Admiration thrives in a sunny or partially shaded location with well-drained soil. It prefers soil that retains moisture but avoids waterlogging. For the best results, plant it in a spot where it can enjoy full sun to bring out its vivid colours or dappled shade for a more subtle effect. Consider using a soaker hose to maintain consistent moisture levels, especially during dry spells.

Growth and Pruning

Berberis Admiration is a compact shrub that grows slowly, reaching about 1 to 1.5 meters in height and width. Ideal for hedges or as an ornamental focal point, it’s easy to manage due to its slow growth rate. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and shape the plant. Regular trimming helps maintain its form and encourages healthy growth. In spring, expect small yellow flowers that give way to red berries, which attract birds but are not suitable for human or canine consumption.
