Berberis darwinii – A Hardy Evergreen with Vibrant Orange Flowers
Berberis darwinii, commonly known as Darwin’s Barberry, is a tough, evergreen shrub prized for its striking orange-yellow flowers that bloom in early spring. Its dense, spiny foliage adds texture and structure to the garden year-round, while its berries provide interest in late summer and autumn. This hardy, low-maintenance plant thrives in a range of conditions, making it a versatile addition to borders, hedges, and wildlife gardens.
Seasonal Beauty & Growth
Spring:
- In spring, Berberis darwinii bursts into life with clusters of small, vibrant orange-yellow flowers. These delicate, tubular blooms create a striking contrast against the dark green foliage, attracting bees and pollinators.
- The flowers appear before the new foliage, adding bright colour to the garden in the early months of the year.
Summer:
- After flowering, the shrub produces small, blue-black berries that ripen in late summer. These berries provide added interest, especially for wildlife, as they attract birds.
- The evergreen leaves continue to provide structure and texture, maintaining a neat and tidy appearance throughout the summer months.
Autumn:
- In autumn, the plant’s berries remain, offering vibrant colour and attracting birds and wildlife. The evergreen foliage remains a rich green, contributing to the garden's overall texture and visual interest as other plants begin to die back.
Winter:
- During winter, the dense foliage of Berberis darwinii continues to provide structure and form. Its spiny leaves remain attractive throughout the colder months, providing year-round interest, even when the garden is bare.
