Green Beech Hedging 125–150cm Bare Root

Tall Bare Root Hedging for Fast Privacy and Classic British Style

Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a timeless, native hedging plant that offers a beautiful, leafy screen with year-round interest. At 125–150cm tall, these bare root plants provide a significant head start—ideal for those wanting quicker privacy without the cost of container-grown plants.

While technically deciduous, Green Beech is famous for holding its rich, coppery autumn leaves well into winter, creating a hedge that offers screening even in the colder months. In spring, lush green foliage emerges to refresh the hedge with vibrant colour.

Key Features

  • Height at Delivery: 125–150cm (bare root)

  • Seasonal Appeal: Bright green leaves in spring/summer, turning golden-bronze and persisting through winter

  • Growth Rate: Moderate – approx. 30–60 cm per year

  • Mature Height: Maintained from 1.5–4 m as desired

  • Root Type: Bare root – ideal for planting between November and April

Why Choose This Size?

  • Excellent mid-height option for faster hedging results

  • Offers a semi-established look soon after planting

  • Good balance between value and impact

  • Ideal for instant screening and larger-scale planting projects

  • Maintains seasonal leaf cover for winter interest and privacy

Planting & Care

  • Planting Season: Bare root season (Nov–Apr)

  • Spacing: 3–4 per metre (single row) or 5–7 per metre (double row)

  • Position: Full sun to partial shade

  • Soil: Moist, well-drained soil – avoid waterlogged conditions

  • Maintenance: Trim annually in late summer to promote density and retain leaves

  • Watering: Keep well-watered during the first year to ensure good establishment

Ideal Uses

  • Native boundary and garden hedging

  • Windbreaks and privacy screens

  • Formal rows or mixed native hedgerows

  • Wildlife-friendly spaces

  • Fast-growing hedging with a traditional look

Pros:

  1. Cost-Effective: Bare root plants are generally cheaper than potted plants.
  2. Variety: Greater selection of species available.
  3. Establishment: Often establish quickly in the garden.

Cons:

  1. Timing: Must be planted during the dormant season (late autumn to early spring).
  2. Initial Care: Require careful handling and timely planting.

Preparation for Planting:

  1. Soak Roots: Immerse the roots in water for a few hours before planting to rehydrate them.
  2. Inspect: Trim any damaged roots with clean, sharp scissors.
  3. Dig Hole: Ensure the hole is wide enough to spread roots out without bending them.
  4. Consider Cutting back: Cutting back by up to 1/3, especially on taller plants will reduce possible losses and improve plant establishment.

Planting Process:

  1. Plant Depth: Plant at the same depth they were grown in the nursery, indicated by the soil mark on the stem.
  2. Fill Hole: Backfill with soil, ensuring no air pockets around the roots.
  3. Water: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.

Possibility of Losses:

  • Adjustment Period: Some plants may not survive the transition due to transplant shock or poor initial care.
  • Mitigation: Proper planting techniques and aftercare, like regular watering and mulching, can reduce losses.

Aftercare Tips:

  1. Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the establishment period.
  2. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  3. Protection: Protect young plants from extreme weather and pests.

Bare root planting is a straightforward, economical way to enhance your garden, provided you follow these essential steps to ensure successful establishment.
