Aronia prunifolia ‘Viking’ – Four Seasons of Beauty and Bounty
Aronia prunifolia ‘Viking’, also known as the Purple Chokeberry, is a remarkable shrub that delivers ornamental impact and edible rewards across the year. In spring, clusters of pure white flowers open against a backdrop of fresh green leaves, buzzing with pollinators. Through summer, its foliage stays clean, lush, and glossy, setting the stage for the next act.
By late summer and early autumn, the branches are weighed down with deep purple-black berries. These tart, antioxidant-rich fruits are loved by birds and can also be harvested for jams, juices, or syrups. As autumn deepens, the foliage transforms into a fiery display of scarlet, crimson, and burnt orange – a seasonal spectacle that rivals the best maples.
Hardy, adaptable, and easy to care for, ‘Viking’ thrives in a wide range of soils, including those that are poor or damp. It tolerates cold winters, summer heat, and urban conditions, making it suitable for both countryside and town gardens.
