Alnus are vigorous deciduous trees and large shrubs with rounded leaves and often conspicuous catkins in winter. Alnus thrive best in moist but well drained soil and prefer a position in full sun.
Alnus Glutinosa known as black or common alder are under estimated trees they have an attractive conical shape, maintenance free, their roots have nitrogen fixing nodules that will actually improve soil fertility. They are wonderfully adaptable to areas that are damp / boggy as the roots can tolerate being flooding for weeks. Not to mention the fact that a lo of our wildlife depends on them as they provide shelter and food for birds, bees, caterpillars, butterflies and more.
Glutinosa has purple / grey leaf buds open to dark green foliage with serrated edges. Flowers are on catkins which appear spring time. Alders have both male and female flowers are found on the same tree. Male catkins are pendulous and yellow. Female catkins are green and oval-shaped and are grouped in numbers of three to eight. They prefer to be planted in full sun to partial shade, they do not require feeding, if they need pruning this can be done late winter to early spring. The height of an Alnus is 6m over 20 years.
