Why Grow Aconitum Napellus ‘Album’?
Pure White Blooms – The tall spires of white flowers create a regal, pristine display, making a bold statement in the garden with their dramatic presence and elegant simplicity.
Upright & Elegant Habit – The plant's tall, columnar shape adds height and structure to the garden, making it ideal for the back of borders, as a focal point, or in woodland settings.
Long-Blooming – This variety blooms from late summer into autumn, offering a pristine touch of colour and interest as many other plants begin to fade.
Pollinator-Friendly – While it’s not the first to bloom, Aconitum Napellus ‘Album’ attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies, adding to the wildlife-friendly appeal of your garden.
Hardy & Low-Maintenance – Fully hardy, this variety is resilient and easy to grow, thriving with minimal care once established, making it a great choice for both novice and experienced gardeners.
Planting & Care Guide
Position: Prefers full sun to partial shade, but it can tolerate light shade, particularly in hotter climates. It thrives best in sheltered spots, away from strong winds that could damage its tall stems.
Soil: Best in moist, well-drained, fertile soil, rich in organic matter. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil and benefits from a consistent level of moisture throughout its growing season.
Watering: Water regularly when newly planted. Once established, Aconitum Napellus ‘Album’ prefers consistent moisture, especially during dry spells, but ensure that the soil is well-drained to avoid root rot.
Maintenance:
- Deadhead spent flowers to keep the plant looking tidy and prevent it from self-seeding, although it will naturally die back after flowering.
- Cut back the plant in autumn after flowering to maintain a clean garden bed and to encourage fresh foliage growth the following season.
- Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding, ensuring the plant continues to perform beautifully year after year.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Aconitum Napellus ‘Album’ pairs magnificently with other late-blooming perennials like Echinacea, Sedum, and Asters, where the purity of its white blooms contrasts beautifully with the warmer hues of oranges, pinks, and purples. For a more refined look, combine with plants that have darker foliage, such as Heuchera or Bergenia, which make the white flowers pop even more. It also looks stunning alongside other vertical plants, like Lobelia or Veronicastrum, where the contrast in colour and form enhances the dramatic effect of its upright spires. For a woodland-style garden, pair with ferns or Astilbe for a soft, naturalistic look that highlights the graceful height of ‘Album’.
Does the height include the pot?
