Aconitum henryi ‘Spark’s Variety’, commonly known as Monkshood, is a tall, upright herbaceous perennial prized for its deep blue to violet hooded flowers that rise above attractive, deeply divided foliage. Flowering in late summer to early autumn, this dramatic and long-lived plant brings a touch of woodland elegance to borders, particularly in partially shaded areas. A favourite in traditional and cottage-style gardens, ‘Spark’s Variety’ adds structure, colour, and seasonal interest when many other perennials begin to fade.
Foliage emerges in spring as a mound of dark green, deeply lobed leaves, providing early texture and coverage in the border.
From August to October, tall, branching spikes of blue-violet flowers appear, each shaped like a monk’s cowl or hood. These dramatic blooms add late-season colour and height, standing out in partially shaded or cooler areas of the garden.
As flowering tapers off, the foliage remains lush before dying back in late autumn. The plant can be cut back after flowering or left to provide structure until the first frosts.
Aconitum dies back to its roots in winter. Mark the area or plant with companions to fill in the space until it re-emerges in spring.
‘Spark’s Variety’ forms upright clumps reaching 1.2 to 1.5 metres (4–5 feet) tall, with a spread of about 30–45 cm (1–1.5 feet). Its tall flowering stems are sturdy and self-supporting, making it suitable for the middle to back of borders, where it provides vertical interest without the need for staking in most sheltered gardens.
Its handsome, glossy foliage is finely divided, resembling that of delphiniums, and remains attractive throughout the growing season.
Its tall form and richly coloured flowers make it a classic companion to late summer perennials such as phlox, rudbeckia, or helenium.
Thrives in light shade, especially in cooler, moisture-retentive soils. Perfect under the canopy of deciduous trees or along north-facing walls.
The nectar-rich flowers attract bumblebees and pollinators, especially when many summer plants have finished blooming.
Long-lasting in arrangements, the flowers of ‘Spark’s Variety’ bring dramatic form and colour to late-season bouquets.
Best in partial shade or dappled sunlight. In full sun, ensure the soil remains moist but well-drained, especially during hot spells.
Prefers humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Tolerates a range of soil types, including clay and loam, as long as drainage is adequate and moisture is retained.
Water during dry periods, especially in summer. Once established, Aconitum is relatively drought-tolerant in shade, but benefits from regular moisture.
Cut back stems after flowering to encourage neatness or allow seed heads to remain for structure.
Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and enrich the soil.
Divide clumps every few years in early spring or autumn if growth becomes congested.
All parts of Aconitum are poisonous if ingested, and can irritate the skin. Always wear gloves when handling, and avoid planting near food-growing areas or where pets and young children may come into contact.
