From Shade tolerant plants

Acer campestre 'Elsrijk' – A Compact & Resilient Field Maple

Acer campestre 'Elsrijk' is a refined and compact cultivar of the native Field Maple, celebrated for its dense, uniform crown, vibrant seasonal foliage, and exceptional resilience in urban environments. With a naturally upright growth habit, it is an ideal choice for streetscapes, small gardens, and formal landscapes where space is limited but structure and beauty are desired.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

  • Spring: Bright green, lobed leaves emerge, forming a lush and neatly rounded canopy. Small, yellow-green flowers bloom subtly, supporting pollinators.
  • Summer: The foliage remains a deep, rich green, offering shade and structure in the landscape.
  • Autumn: The tree puts on a stunning display of golden-yellow hues, creating a warm seasonal contrast before the leaves fall.
  • Winter: Smooth grey-brown bark develops subtle ridges with age, adding year-round interest.

Structure & Form

Acer campestre 'Elsrijk' has a more compact and upright habit than the standard Field Maple. It reaches a height of 7m with a dense, oval-shaped crown, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice for formal and structured landscapes. Unlike the wild species, β€˜Elsrijk’ maintains a naturally tidy and symmetrical form, requiring little pruning.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Street & Urban Planting – Highly pollution-tolerant and well-suited for avenue planting.
  • Small & Formal Gardens – Compact size and structured growth make it a perfect feature tree.
  • Commercial & Public Spaces – Used in parks, business developments, and plazas for its durability and elegance.
  • Wildlife-Friendly Gardens – Supports pollinators and birds, contributing to urban biodiversity.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Thrives in full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Adaptable to chalky, clay, loamy, or sandy soils; prefers well-drained conditions.
  • Hardiness: Fully frost and drought-tolerant once established.
  • Maintenance: Minimal pruning is needed due to its naturally compact and structured shape.

Why Choose Acer campestre 'Elsrijk'?

With its neat, upright form, resilience, and vibrant autumn color, Acer campestre 'Elsrijk' is a versatile, low-maintenance tree perfect for urban, garden, and commercial settings. Whether planted as a standalone specimen, in rows for avenue planting, or mixed within landscapes, it offers beauty, durability, and ecological benefits.

Perfect Plant Combinations

  • Evergreens – Pair with Taxus baccata (English Yew) or Ilex aquifolium (Holly) for year-round contrast.
  • Flowering Shrubs – Complement with Cornus sanguinea (Dogwood) or Viburnum opulus (Guelder Rose) for seasonal color.
  • Perennials – Underplant with Hosta, Heuchera, or Geranium for added texture and ground coverage.
  • Groundcovers – Use Vinca minor (Periwinkle) or Pachysandra terminalis to suppress weeds and enhance the base of the tree.
  • Other Deciduous Trees – Combine with Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) or Prunus serrulata (Japanese Cherry) for a layered landscape with diverse seasonal interest.

Acer campestre 'Elsrijk' is a standout tree for those seeking a structured, resilient, and aesthetically refined maple that excels in both urban and garden landscapes.
