Lavandula angustifolia – Classic English Lavender

Lavandula angustifolia, commonly known as English Lavender, is one of the most beloved and enduring garden shrubs, cherished for its intensely fragrant purple-blue flower spikes, soft silver-grey foliage, and compact, rounded habit. A summer-flowering evergreen, it brings colour, scent, and wildlife appeal to borders, pathway edges, gravel gardens, and containers. Hardy, drought tolerant once established, and remarkably low maintenance, English Lavender is a cornerstone plant for traditional cottage gardens and contemporary planting schemes alike.

Habit & Appearance

Foliage:
Narrow, aromatic leaves in soft silver-grey provide attractive year-round structure, forming neat, bushy mounds that remain largely evergreen in milder conditions. The foliage itself is richly scented when brushed or cut, releasing the characteristic lavender fragrance throughout the growing season.

Flowers:
From early to mid-summer, slender upright stems rise above the foliage carrying dense spikes of small, richly fragrant flowers in shades of purple, violet-blue, and lilac, depending on the variety. The blooms are irresistible to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators, making English Lavender an outstanding plant for wildlife-friendly gardens.

Form:
The plant naturally develops a compact, dome-shaped, bushy habit that lends itself beautifully to edging paths, forming low informal hedges, or anchoring the front of a sunny border with structure and fragrance.

Growing Conditions

Position:
Plant in full sun for the best flowering performance and the strongest, most concentrated fragrance. Lavandula angustifolia thrives in open, sunny aspects and performs poorly in shade or heavily sheltered positions where air circulation is restricted.

Soil:
Well-drained soil is essential. English Lavender thrives in light, sandy, or chalky soils and is particularly tolerant of poor, low-fertility conditions. Heavy, wet, or waterlogged soils — especially in winter — will cause root rot and quickly weaken or kill established plants. Improving drainage by incorporating grit or sharp sand at planting is strongly recommended on heavier soils.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy throughout the UK, tolerating temperatures down to approximately -15°C. Established plants in free-draining soils are highly resilient, though young plants may benefit from some protection in their first winter.

Watering:
Once established, Lavandula angustifolia is highly drought tolerant and requires minimal supplementary watering. Avoid overwatering, as consistently moist conditions around the roots are far more damaging than dry spells.

Care & Pruning

Pruning:
Light trimming after flowering is essential to keep plants compact, bushy, and productive. Cut back the flowered stems and a small amount of the foliage growth, taking care never to cut back hard into old, woody stems below the leafy growth, as lavender will not reliably regenerate from old wood. An annual trim in late summer or early autumn, and a light tidy in spring, will keep plants in excellent shape for many years.

Feeding:
Little or no feeding is required. Lavender performs best in lean conditions, and over-fertilising — particularly with nitrogen-rich feeds — encourages excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowers and fragrance.

General Maintenance:
English Lavender is a naturally low-maintenance plant. Deadheading spent flower spikes can extend the display and tidy the appearance, while regular light pruning over the years prevents the plant from becoming excessively woody and open at the centre.

Perfect For

  • Cottage & Traditional Gardens: A timeless planting staple with enduring charm.

  • Pollinator & Wildlife Gardens: Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects.

  • Gravel & Mediterranean Planting: Thrives in the free-draining, sunny conditions of gravel garden schemes.

  • Low Hedging & Path Edging: Ideal for creating fragrant, informal borders along paths and driveways.

  • Patio & Container Planting: Well suited to sunny containers where its fragrance can be enjoyed at close range.

  • Cut & Dried Flowers: Flower spikes can be harvested and dried for use in arrangements, potpourri, and sachets.
