Yew Root Ball Hedging Pre-Orders Now Open

Premium Evergreen Yew Hedging – Available October to March

Yew (Taxus baccata) is widely regarded as one of the finest evergreen hedging plants available. With its rich dark green foliage, exceptional longevity and ability to create a beautifully dense formal hedge, Yew has been used in British gardens and landscapes for centuries.

Our root ball Yew is field-grown for several years before being carefully lifted during the dormant season with an intact ball of soil surrounding the roots. This allows you to purchase mature, high-quality plants at a significantly lower cost than equivalent container-grown specimens.

Available exclusively between October and March, root ball Yew is the ideal choice for creating an elegant, long-lasting hedge.

Why Pre-Order Your Yew Hedging?

Our Yew is lifted fresh from the field each autumn, with the finest plants available from the very first lifting of the season.

By pre-ordering now, you'll benefit from:

  • ✔ Priority access to freshly lifted field-grown plants
  • ✔ The widest choice of sizes
  • ✔ Guaranteed availability before the busy planting season
  • ✔ Exclusive pre-order offers before lifting begins

Larger grades take many years to grow and are produced in limited quantities, making early ordering highly recommended.

Why Choose Root Ball Yew?

Field-grown Yew develops naturally over many years, producing a dense branching structure and a strong fibrous root system before lifting.

Root ball plants provide exceptional value, allowing you to establish an instant, premium hedge with mature plants at a much lower cost than large container-grown specimens.

Benefits include:

  • Larger plants for less money
  • Freshly lifted field-grown stock
  • Strong, well-developed root systems
  • Excellent establishment when planted correctly
  • Beautiful year-round evergreen screening
  • Long-lived, low-maintenance hedging

With proper planting and aftercare, Yew establishes steadily and develops into one of the finest hedges you can grow.

Why Choose Yew Hedging?

Yew is considered the gold standard for evergreen hedging thanks to its beauty, resilience and remarkable lifespan.

It offers:

  • Rich dark green evergreen foliage
  • Extremely dense growth
  • Outstanding privacy and screening
  • Slow, controlled growth for easy maintenance
  • Excellent tolerance of hard pruning
  • Exceptional longevity
  • Ideal for formal and traditional gardens
  • Native to the UK and excellent for wildlife

Unlike many conifers, Yew will regenerate from old wood, making it one of the few evergreen hedging plants that can be renovated if it becomes overgrown.

Planting Root Ball Yew

Root ball Yew should always be planted as soon as possible after delivery.

1. Prepare the Ground

Dig a planting trench or individual holes wider than each rootball and loosen the surrounding soil to encourage new root growth.

2. Position the Plant

Place each rootball so the top sits level with the surrounding soil surface. Avoid planting too deeply, as this can reduce successful establishment.

3. Leave the Hessian On

Do not remove the hessian or wire basket. These materials are designed to hold the rootball together during planting and will naturally decompose over time, allowing roots to grow through.

4. Backfill

Refill using the excavated soil, firm gently around the rootball and water thoroughly.

Soil and Position

Yew grows well in a wide range of conditions but performs best in well-drained soil.

Suitable for:

  • Chalk
  • Loam
  • Sandy soils
  • Well-drained clay

It thrives in:

  • Full sun
  • Partial shade
  • Full shade
  • Sheltered and exposed locations

Yew does not like prolonged waterlogging, so heavy clay soils should be improved with organic matter or grit to encourage drainage before planting.

Aftercare

Good aftercare during the first growing season is essential.

We recommend:

  • Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
  • Continue deep watering throughout the first spring and summer during dry weather.
  • Water slowly so moisture penetrates the full depth of the rootball.
  • Apply mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture.
  • Keep grass and weeds clear around each plant.
  • Stake taller specimens if required to prevent wind rock.

Yew establishes more slowly than faster-growing hedging plants, but once rooted it is exceptionally resilient and requires very little maintenance.

Pruning Yew Hedging

Yew responds exceptionally well to pruning and is one of the easiest evergreen hedges to shape.

For best results:

  • Trim once each year during late summer.
  • Formal hedges can be lightly clipped twice annually if required.
  • Yew will regenerate from old wood, making it ideal for long-term maintenance and renovation.

Yew Root Ball Hedging FAQs

When is root ball Yew available?

Root ball Yew is available between October and March, while the plants remain dormant.

Should I remove the hessian?

No. Leave both the hessian and any wire basket intact. They naturally break down after planting while helping to keep the rootball together during establishment.

Can Yew be planted in winter?

Yes. Winter is the ideal planting season, provided the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.

How much watering will it need?

Water thoroughly immediately after planting and continue deep watering throughout the first growing season. During warm or dry periods, two or three deep soakings each week will help the plants establish successfully.

Is root ball Yew guaranteed?

Root ball plants are freshly lifted from the field and rely on correct planting, suitable soil conditions and good aftercare for successful establishment. Because factors such as weather, planting depth, watering and soil conditions are outside our control, root ball hedging is supplied without guarantee.
