Viburnum × bodnantense 'Charles Lamont' is an outstanding deciduous shrub, celebrated above all for its remarkable winter flowering. From late autumn through to early spring, its bare stems are studded with clusters of richly fragrant, deep rose-pink flowers that open on mild days and fill the cold garden air with a sweet, warming perfume. Few shrubs can match its ability to bring colour and scent to the garden during the quietest months of the year, making it a genuinely invaluable addition to any planting scheme.
An upright, vigorous shrub of broadly columnar habit, 'Charles Lamont' is considered one of the finest selections of the Bodnant viburnum group, prized for its particularly deep flower colouring and reliable, prolific display. The bronze-tinged young foliage that emerges in spring provides a pleasing follow-on to the winter flowers, and the handsome, dark green leaves contribute good structure to the border through the growing season. Fully hardy and easy to grow, it is a shrub that rewards very little effort with a great deal of seasonal pleasure.
Growing conditions
Position. 'Charles Lamont' thrives in full sun to partial shade. A bright, open position will encourage the strongest flowering and most intense fragrance, though it will grow perfectly well with a few hours of dappled shade each day. Avoid deep shade, which can reduce flower production significantly. A spot with some shelter from the harshest winter winds will help protect the delicate flowers during cold spells, though the plant itself is fully hardy.
Soil. This viburnum is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including loam, clay, and chalk, provided drainage is adequate. It performs best in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil and is equally at home in neutral to mildly alkaline conditions as in slightly acidic ground. Avoid poorly drained or waterlogged positions, which can lead to root problems over time.

Combine it with the vivid stem colour of Cornus alba or Cornus sanguinea cultivars, the golden winter tracery of Hamamelis, and the cool white flowers of Helleborus niger for a border that truly earns its place during the coldest months.
