A deciduous shrub celebrated for its brilliant yellow winter stems that light up the dormant garden. White spring flowers give way to attractive white berries, while fresh green foliage turns warm tones in autumn.
Winter interest gardens, waterside plantings, mixed shrub borders, naturalising in larger gardens, and creating colourful low hedges. Excellent for wildlife gardens as flowers attract beneficial insects and berries feed birds.
Plant in moisture-retentive soil in full sun or part shade. Thrives in wet conditions making it ideal for bog gardens. For best stem colour, hard prune every 1-2 years in early spring, cutting stems back to near ground level. Feed after pruning.
Combines beautifully with red-stemmed Cornus alba varieties, Salix 'Britzensis', evergreen Carex, winter flowering Viburnum, and ornamental grasses. Underplant with snowdrops and winter aconites for early spring colour.
A low-maintenance shrub that delivers maximum impact during the quietest months of the gardening year.
