Callicarpa bodinieri 'Magical Snow Queen' – A Beautyberry with a Breathtaking White Berry Display

Callicarpa bodinieri 'Magical Snow Queen' is a truly distinctive and elegant deciduous shrub that brings something genuinely rare to the autumn and winter garden: the spectacular fruiting display of the Beautyberry expressed in a luminous, pearlescent white. Where most Beautyberries captivate with rich jewel-toned purples and violets, 'Magical Snow Queen' takes an altogether different and more refined path – draping its gracefully arching stems in dense, tightly packed clusters of pure white berries that seem almost to glow from within as the season deepens.

Through summer, soft pink-tinged flowers stud the branches in charming, understated clusters, quietly drawing in bees and butterflies before the main event begins. As the days shorten and temperatures begin to fall, the berries develop into gleaming, pearlescent spheres, lined along the stems like strings of polished pearls. Against bare autumn branches or the dark backdrop of evergreen planting, the effect is quite breathtaking – cool, luminous and effortlessly elegant. The berries persist stubbornly well into winter long after the foliage has fallen, providing weeks of outstanding ornamental interest through the coldest months.

The foliage, too, makes its own quiet contribution to the seasonal story – emerging fresh and bright green in spring, deepening through the summer months, then warming to soft golden-yellow tones before dropping to reveal the full splendour of the fruiting stems beneath. Compact, well-branched and fully hardy, 'Magical Snow Queen' is as straightforward to cultivate as it is beautiful to behold, and brings a cool, sophisticated contrast to late-season planting schemes of every style and scale.

Why Choose Callicarpa bodinieri 'Magical Snow Queen'?

  • Uniquely Beautiful White Berries – Rare and striking pure white berry clusters that set this variety apart from all standard Beautyberries and make it an instant garden talking point.

  • Outstanding Autumn and Winter Interest – Pearlescent, luminous berries persist on bare stems well into the coldest months of the year.

  • Multi-Season Appeal – Fresh spring foliage, charming summer flowers, warm golden autumn colour and spectacular fruiting stems through winter – all in a single plant.

  • Wildlife Value – Summer flowers attract bees and butterflies; the persistent winter berries provide a valuable food source for visiting birds.

  • Elegant and Versatile – The cool, luminous tones complement contemporary, naturalistic and traditional garden styles with equal ease.

  • Low Maintenance – Fully hardy, adaptable to a range of conditions and simple to keep in excellent shape with minimal intervention.

Growing Conditions

Position: Plant in full sun or light partial shade. A sunny, open aspect will reward you with the most prolific berry production and the brightest, most luminous colouring. In shadier positions the plant will still grow and perform, though berry set and overall vigour may be somewhat reduced.

Soil: Thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Tolerant of a range of soil types including loam and lighter clays, provided drainage is satisfactory. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal, though 'Magical Snow Queen' will adapt well to mildly alkaline conditions without significant difficulty.

Hardiness: Fully hardy across most of the UK and tolerates cold winters reliably once well established. Newly planted specimens will benefit from a sheltered position through their first season while the root system develops.

Planting tip: For the most generous and consistent berry display, plant in groups of two or more. Cross-pollination between neighbouring plants significantly increases the density and reliability of fruit set, amplifying the ornamental impact considerably and ensuring the white berry clusters are as spectacular as possible.

Care

Watering: Water consistently throughout the first growing season to help the plant establish a strong, deep root system. Once well settled, 'Magical Snow Queen' becomes reasonably drought-tolerant, though it will appreciate a thorough soaking during prolonged dry spells in summer – particularly while the berries are setting and beginning to develop.

Feeding: Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in early spring as new growth begins to emerge. This supports the development of vigorous new shoots and encourages generous flowering followed by a heavy and reliable berry set later in the season.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring, before new growth gets underway. Cut stems back by around one third to one half to stimulate the production of strong, productive new wood and to maintain a compact, well-shaped and bushy habit. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing stems at the same time to keep the plant open, healthy and well-ventilated. Avoid any pruning in autumn – the berry-laden fruiting stems are the plant's crowning glory and should always be left to perform through the winter months before being cut back in spring.

Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant each spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and gradually improve soil structure over time. Keep the mulch clear of the main stems to prevent any risk of rotting at the base.

Design & Planting Ideas

  • Plant against a backdrop of dark evergreens such as Yew, Holly or Pittosporum to maximise the luminous, glowing quality of the white berries against a rich, contrasting foil.
