Tilia cordata 'Greenspire', commonly known as Greenspire Small-leaved Lime, is a popular, fast-growing deciduous tree with a dense, pyramidal crown. It’s valued for its symmetrical shape, glossy green foliage, fragrant flowers, and suitability for urban and landscape planting in the UK. This cultivar is often chosen for avenues, streets, parks, and large gardens due to its reliable form, hardiness, and tolerance of pollution.

  • Leaves: The leaves are heart-shaped, typical of lime trees, with serrated edges. Glossy dark green during the summer, turning yellow in the autumn, creating a lovely display.
  • Flowers: In early summer (typically June to July), Greenspire produces small, fragrant, creamy-yellow flowers in drooping clusters (cymes). The flowers emit a sweet, honey-like fragrance, which attracts bees and other pollinators.
  • Fruits: After flowering, the tree produces small, rounded, nut-like fruits with a dry, hard surface. Birds and small mammals may feed on the seeds.
  • Bark: The bark is smooth and grey when young, becoming more ridged and furrowed as the tree matures, offering visual interest in winter.
  • Height: Typically reaches 12-15 meters (40-50 feet) at maturity.
  • Shape: Greenspire has a pyramidal to oval crown with a strong central leader, making it highly attractive for formal plantings.

Tilia cordata 'Greenspire' thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Prefers well-drained, fertile soils but is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including loam, clay, and sandy soils. Suitable for a wide range of UK climates, including urban areas where it tolerates pollution and compacted soils. Prune in late winter to early spring if needed, mainly to remove dead or damaged branches or to maintain its shape. Regular pruning in its early years can help develop a strong structure, but as it matures, little pruning is required.

  • Its symmetrical, upright growth habit and tolerance of urban conditions make it ideal for planting along streets, driveways, and avenues.
  • Suitable for large landscapes where its size and form can be appreciated.
  • Its reliable shape and minimal maintenance make it a good candidate for formal or structured planting schemes, including as a single specimen or in rows.
