Prunus serrula – Tibetan Cherry (Heavy Standard, 10–12cm Girth)

Striking ornamental tree with polished mahogany bark

Prunus serrula, also known as Tibetan Cherry, is a stunning small deciduous tree best known for its glossy, coppery-red bark, which peels to reveal a polished, mahogany-like surface — especially striking in winter light. This heavy standard specimen (10–12cm girth) offers immediate impact and strong architectural presence.

The narrow green leaves turn soft yellow in autumn, and in spring, small white blossom adds a delicate touch before the foliage emerges.

Key Features:

  • Highly ornamental mahogany peeling bark

  • Small white spring flowers

  • Autumn leaf colour: yellow-gold

  • Perfect as a specimen or feature tree

  • Winter interest from bark colour and form

Growing Conditions:

  • Position: Full sun or light shade

  • Soil: Moist, well-drained

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK

  • Ultimate Height & Spread: 6–8m high × 4–6m spread in 20 years

  • Maintenance: Minimal; light prune in summer if needed

Prunus serrula is ideal for adding elegance and year-round interest to courtyards, lawns, or contemporary landscapes.
