Salix x sep. Tristis Chrysocoma

Salix × sepulcralis ‘Chrysocoma’ – Golden Weeping Willow with Dramatic Silhouette

Salix × sepulcralis ‘Chrysocoma’, commonly known as the Golden Weeping Willow, is a spectacular deciduous tree celebrated for its graceful, pendulous branches and vibrant yellow-golden young shoots. Its dramatic weeping habit and fast growth create an instantly striking focal point in parks, lakesides, and large gardens.

Ideal as a specimen tree, water-side planting, or ornamental feature, ‘Chrysocoma’ combines year-round interest, rapid establishment, and breathtaking movement in the landscape.

Why Grow Salix × sepulcralis ‘Chrysocoma’?

1. Spectacular Weeping Form
Long, pendulous branches cascade elegantly, creating a dramatic, sculptural silhouette that draws attention from all angles.

2. Striking Golden Shoots
Young stems emerge bright yellow in spring, adding vibrant seasonal colour that fades to fresh green over summer.

3. Fast Growth & Impact
Rapidly achieves impressive height and spread, providing instant structure, shade, and visual drama in large gardens or landscapes.

4. Hardy & Adaptable
Thrives in moist soils and tolerates a wide range of conditions, including damp or waterlogged sites.

5. Multi-Season Interest
Even in winter, the weeping habit and sculptural branches provide a striking architectural feature in the garden.

How to Grow Salix × sepulcralis ‘Chrysocoma’

Position:
Prefers full sun to partial shade. Performs best near water or in moist, fertile ground.

Soil:
Thrives in moist, well-drained soils but tolerates wet or clay soils. Avoid prolonged drought.

Watering:
Water well during establishment. Mature trees require consistent moisture, especially in dry conditions.

Pruning:
Light pruning in late winter can maintain shape and remove dead or crossing branches. Avoid hard pruning that removes too much of the weeping habit.

Growth Habit:
Deciduous, fast-growing weeping tree. Reaches 10–15 m tall with a spread of 8–12 m, forming a dramatic cascading canopy.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy across the UK (H6). Tolerates wind, frost, and wet conditions.

Design Ideas

  • Plant as a focal specimen in parks, large gardens, or by lakes and ponds.

  • Use to frame water features or create a naturalistic landscape.

  • Combine with ornamental grasses or perennials for seasonal contrast.

  • Ideal for large spaces where its height, pendulous habit, and golden shoots can be fully appreciated.

Final Thought

With its cascading branches, golden shoots, and fast-growing habit, Salix × sepulcralis ‘Chrysocoma’ is a show-stopping ornamental tree. Perfect for large gardens, water features, and parks, it delivers year-round drama, movement, and architectural beauty.
