Green Beech Hedging 80–100cm Bare Root

Premium-Height Native Hedging for a Beautiful, Seasonal Screen

Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a timeless, deciduous hedging plant that brings elegance, structure, and year-round interest to gardens and landscapes. Supplied at 80–100cm tall as bare root plants, this size is perfect for quicker impact while still offering excellent value, ideal for those who want to establish a quality hedge with a head start.

In spring and summer, it produces lush green foliage that turns golden-copper in autumn. Remarkably, beech retains its dead leaves throughout winter, giving it a semi-evergreen quality and offering privacy all year.

Key Features

  • Height at Delivery: 80–100cm (bare root, field-grown)

  • Seasonal Interest: Green spring/summer leaves, coppery autumn/winter foliage

  • Growth Rate: Moderate – approx. 30–60cm per year

  • Ultimate Height: 1.5–4 m, depending on how often it’s clipped

  • Root Type: Bare root – suitable for planting during the dormant season (Nov–Apr)

Why Choose Green Beech?

  • Semi-evergreen privacy – copper leaves stay on branches into winter

  • Elegant formality – excellent for structured or natural-style hedges

  • Wildlife-friendly – supports UK biodiversity

  • Hardy and low-maintenance – thrives in most soils and light conditions

  • Clips beautifully – responds well to pruning for dense coverage

Planting & Growing Tips

  • Planting Season: November to April (bare root season)

  • Spacing: 4–5 plants per metre for a single row; 5–7 per metre for a double staggered row

  • Position: Sun or partial shade

  • Soil: Moist, well-drained, not prone to waterlogging

  • Aftercare: Water during dry spells; trim once annually in late summer to promote leaf retention and bushy growth

Ideal For

  • Garden and boundary hedging

  • Native and wildlife-friendly planting schemes

  • Formal or informal hedgerows

  • Screening and windbreaks

  • Projects requiring instant structure with natural seasonal charm

Pros:

  1. Cost-Effective: Bare root plants are generally cheaper than potted plants.
  2. Variety: Greater selection of species available.
  3. Establishment: Often establish quickly in the garden.

Cons:

  1. Timing: Must be planted during the dormant season (late autumn to early spring).
  2. Initial Care: Require careful handling and timely planting.

Preparation for Planting:

  1. Soak Roots: Immerse the roots in water for a few hours before planting to rehydrate them.
  2. Inspect: Trim any damaged roots with clean, sharp scissors.
  3. Dig Hole: Ensure the hole is wide enough to spread roots out without bending them.
  4. Consider Cutting back: Cutting back by up to 1/3, especially on taller plants will reduce possible losses and improve plant establishment.

Planting Process:

  1. Plant Depth: Plant at the same depth they were grown in the nursery, indicated by the soil mark on the stem.
  2. Fill Hole: Backfill with soil, ensuring no air pockets around the roots.
  3. Water: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.

Possibility of Losses:

  • Adjustment Period: Some plants may not survive the transition due to transplant shock or poor initial care.
  • Mitigation: Proper planting techniques and aftercare, like regular watering and mulching, can reduce losses.

Aftercare Tips:

  1. Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the establishment period.
  2. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  3. Protection: Protect young plants from extreme weather and pests.

Bare root planting is a straightforward, economical way to enhance your garden, provided you follow these essential steps to ensure successful establishment.
