Thuja Root Ball Hedging (Brabant & Smaragd/Emerald) Pre-Orders Now Open

Premium Evergreen Conifer Hedging – Available October to March

Thuja is one of the UK's most popular evergreen conifer hedging plants, valued for its dense foliage, excellent year-round screening and attractive natural appearance. Whether you're looking for the fast-growing Thuja Brabant or the more compact Thuja Smaragd (Emerald Green), root ball Thuja offers an economical way to establish an instant evergreen hedge.

Our root ball Thuja is field-grown for several years before being carefully lifted during the dormant season with an intact ball of soil surrounding the roots. This provides mature, well-established plants at a significantly lower cost than equivalent container-grown specimens.

Available exclusively between October and March, root ball Thuja is ideal for creating privacy, shelter and year-round screening.

Why Pre-Order Your Thuja Hedging?

Our Thuja is lifted fresh from the field each autumn, with the highest quality plants available from the first lifting of the season.

By pre-ordering now, you'll benefit from:

  • ✔ Priority access to freshly lifted field-grown plants
  • ✔ The widest choice of sizes
  • ✔ Guaranteed availability before the busy planting season
  • ✔ Exclusive pre-order offers before lifting begins

Larger specimens are produced in limited quantities and often sell out early.

Why Choose Root Ball Thuja?

Field-grown Thuja develops naturally over several years, producing a strong fibrous root system and dense branching before lifting.

Root ball plants provide exceptional value, allowing you to establish an instant conifer hedge with mature plants at a fraction of the cost of large container-grown stock.

Benefits include:

  • Larger plants for less money
  • Freshly lifted field-grown stock
  • Strong, well-developed root systems
  • Excellent establishment when planted correctly
  • Immediate year-round privacy
  • Long-lasting evergreen screening

With good planting and aftercare, Thuja establishes quickly and develops into a dense, attractive hedge.

Which Thuja Should You Choose?

Thuja Brabant

Thuja Brabant is the fastest-growing Thuja variety and is ideal if you're looking to create a dense privacy screen in the shortest possible time.

It offers:

  • Fast annual growth
  • Dense evergreen foliage
  • Excellent screening
  • Easy maintenance
  • Ideal for larger boundaries

Brabant responds well to trimming and can be maintained as either a formal hedge or a more natural screen.

Thuja Smaragd (Emerald Green)

Also known as Thuja Emerald or Smaragd, this variety has a naturally compact, upright habit with rich emerald-green foliage that retains its colour throughout winter.

It offers:

  • Naturally neat growth
  • Rich emerald-green colour
  • Slower growth than Brabant
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Ideal for formal gardens and decorative boundaries

Smaragd is perfect where a more refined appearance is required.

Planting Root Ball Thuja

Root ball Thuja should always be planted as soon as possible after delivery.

1. Prepare the Ground

Dig a trench or individual planting holes wider than the rootball and loosen the surrounding soil to encourage root development.

2. Position the Plant

Place each rootball so the top sits level with the surrounding ground. Avoid planting too deeply, as this can affect establishment.

3. Leave the Hessian On

Do not remove the hessian or wire basket. These materials help keep the rootball intact during planting and naturally decompose over time while allowing roots to grow through.

4. Backfill

Backfill with the excavated soil, firm gently around the rootball and water thoroughly.

Soil and Position

Thuja performs best in:

  • Moist but well-drained soil
  • Clay (provided it isn't waterlogged)
  • Loam
  • Sandy soils with regular watering

It grows well in:

  • Full sun
  • Partial shade
  • Sheltered gardens
  • Exposed locations

Avoid planting into permanently waterlogged ground.

Aftercare

Good aftercare is essential during the first growing season.

We recommend:

  • Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
  • Continue deep watering throughout the first spring and summer, particularly during dry weather.
  • Water slowly so moisture penetrates the full depth of the rootball.
  • Apply mulch around the base to help retain moisture.
  • Keep grass and weeds clear around each plant.
  • Stake taller specimens if required to prevent wind rock.

Thuja can dry out surprisingly quickly during its first year after planting, so consistent watering is the key to successful establishment.

Pruning Thuja Hedging

Thuja requires very little pruning but responds well to light trimming.

For best results:

  • Trim once each year during late spring or late summer.
  • Avoid cutting back into old brown wood, as conifers rarely regenerate from bare stems.
  • Regular light trimming will encourage a dense, tidy hedge.

Thuja Root Ball Hedging FAQs

When is root ball Thuja available?

Root ball Thuja is available between October and March, while the plants remain dormant.

Which is better, Brabant or Smaragd?

Both make excellent evergreen hedges.

  • Brabant is the faster-growing choice and ideal for larger screening projects.
  • Smaragd (Emerald) has a slower growth rate but naturally maintains a neater, more compact shape and vibrant green colour.

Should I remove the hessian?

No. Leave both the hessian and any wire basket intact. They naturally break down after planting while helping to keep the rootball together during establishment.

Can Thuja be planted in winter?

Yes. Winter is the ideal planting season, provided the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.

How much watering will it need?

Water thoroughly immediately after planting and continue deep watering throughout the first growing season. During warm or dry periods, two or three deep soakings each week are much more beneficial than frequent light watering.

Is root ball Thuja guaranteed?

Root ball plants are freshly lifted from the field and depend on correct planting, suitable soil conditions and good aftercare for successful establishment. Because these factors are outside our control, root ball hedging is supplied without guarantee.
