View full detailsTaxus baccata, expertly clipped into a formal cone, is one of the most enduring and elegant evergreen plants for the garden. With its dense, dark green, needle-like foliage and naturally upright habit, the yew cone adds a sense of permanence, structure, and quiet luxury to borders, entrances, and formal layouts. Known for its exceptional longevity, adaptability, and tolerance of pruning, Taxus cones are a favourite in classic topiary, providing strong vertical accents that work equally well in traditional or contemporary designs.
Year-Round Structure – Provides rich, dark green colour and crisp architectural form throughout the year, making it a valuable focal point in every season.
Excellent for Shaping – One of the best evergreen shrubs for topiary, Taxus clips beautifully into cone shapes and holds its form with minimal maintenance.
Extremely Long-Lived – Yew is renowned for its longevity and resilience, thriving for decades with the right care and offering an investment in the long-term beauty of your garden.
Versatile & Stylish – Works beautifully in formal designs, cottage gardens, or modern landscapes, and thrives both in the ground and in large containers.
Wildlife Value – While toxic to humans and pets if ingested, yew provides excellent shelter for birds and small wildlife, and its autumn berries attract birds.
Position: Best in full sun to partial shade; tolerates deep shade better than most evergreens. Prefers a sheltered or open site.
Soil: Grows well in almost any well-drained soil, from chalky to clay, though it dislikes waterlogged conditions.
Watering: Water regularly when newly planted or if grown in containers; once established, Taxus is highly drought-tolerant.
Trimming: Clip lightly once or twice a year (late spring and/or late summer) to maintain its cone shape. Yew responds well to hard pruning if needed.
Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy, dense growth.
Mulching: Mulch annually in spring with organic matter to retain moisture and enrich the soil.
Pest Care: Generally pest- and disease-resistant, though occasional monitoring for scale insects is advisable.
Taxus cones pair beautifully with soft, flowering perennials like Lavender, Nepeta, or Geranium Rozanne, where their formal shape contrasts with looser textures. In more formal settings, combine with Buxus spheres, Ilex cones, or Laurus standards for a structured, elegant design. For year-round impact in pots, underplant with Violas, Cyclamen, or Ivy to create a lush, layered effect.
