Pyracantha ‘Red Cushion’ – Compact Firethorn with Bright Red Berries
Pyracantha ‘Red Cushion’ is a compact and versatile evergreen shrub, valued for its seasonal interest and practical garden uses. In late spring, clusters of small white flowers cover the plant, attracting pollinators and creating a soft, delicate display against the glossy green foliage.
As the seasons progress, these flowers give way to masses of bright red berries in autumn, which persist well into winter, adding vibrant colour when much of the garden is fading. The berries also provide an important food source for birds, enhancing wildlife value.
Its naturally low, spreading habit makes ‘Red Cushion’ particularly useful as ground cover or for training against walls and fences. The dense, thorny growth also makes it effective as a low barrier or informal security planting.
Hardy and adaptable, it thrives in sun or partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soils, provided they are well-drained. Once established, it is robust and low maintenance, requiring only occasional pruning to maintain shape or encourage heavier berrying.
Colourful, practical, and wildlife-friendly, Pyracantha ‘Red Cushion’ is an excellent choice for adding year-round interest and structure to the garden.
