Evergreen

Sarcococca confusa – Sweet Box

A Compact Evergreen Shrub with Fragrant Winter Flowers and Glossy Foliage

Sarcococca confusa, commonly known as Sweet Box, is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its highly fragrant, winter-flowering blooms, glossy dark green foliage, and tough, shade-tolerant nature. This refined plant provides subtle beauty and valuable scent during the darkest months of the year, making it ideal for winter gardens, entrances, shady borders, and containers.

Key Features

  • Fragrant Winter Flowers: Tiny, creamy-white flowers appear in mid- to late winter, emitting a strong, sweet vanilla-like scent that can perfume an entire area.

  • Evergreen Foliage: Neatly arranged, lance-shaped leaves are deep green and glossy, offering year-round structure and elegance.

  • Black Berries: After flowering, plants often develop shiny black berries, adding a subtle decorative element through spring.

Seasonal Interest

Winter

  • Small clusters of highly fragrant, creamy-white flowers bloom from December to March, often unnoticed visually but unmistakable by scent.

  • Flowers are followed by glossy black berries in late winter to early spring.

Spring–Autumn

  • Maintains a neat, evergreen form with rich foliage that contrasts well with seasonal perennials or lighter green planting.

  • An excellent backdrop plant for changing garden colours.

Structure & Growth

  • Height & Spread: Typically reaches 1–1.5 m high × 1–1.5 m wide.

  • Growth Habit: Slow-growing, dense, and bushy, forming a naturally rounded, compact shape.

  • Pruning: Minimal. Can be lightly pruned after flowering to maintain shape if needed.

Landscape Uses

  • Entrance Planting & Walkways: Ideal near doorways and paths where winter scent can be appreciated.

  • Shade Gardens: Thrives in full or partial shade where many other evergreens struggle.

  • Low Hedging: Can be used as an informal low hedge or edging plant.

  • Containers: Performs well in pots or planters for patios and courtyards.

  • Woodland Borders: Excellent in mixed planting under trees or beside shady walls.

Growing Requirements

  • Light: Best in partial to full shade, though it can tolerate some sun if the soil remains moist.

  • Soil: Prefers moist but well-drained, fertile soil; tolerant of clay, loam, and sandy soils.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy (H5–H6); performs well in most UK gardens.

  • Care: Virtually maintenance-free; water during dry spells in the first year or when container-grown.

Why Choose Sarcococca confusa?

Sarcococca confusa is a low-maintenance, shade-loving evergreen that delivers unexpected winter beauty. Its potent fragrance, glossy structure, and year-round appeal make it a valuable asset for almost any garden style—especially where winter interest and low light tolerance are needed.

Perfect Pairings

  • Other Winter Performers: Combine with Helleborus niger, Hamamelis, or Cyclamen coum.

  • Foliage Contrast: Pair with ferns, Heuchera, or Carex for varied texture and tone.

  • Evergreen Companions: Complements Boxwood (Buxus), Skimmia, or Mahonia for layered shade planting.
