Sambucus Racemosa Sutherland Gold

Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold' – The Golden Elder with Bright Foliage and Vibrant Clusters

Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold' is a stunning deciduous shrub that stands out with its vibrant golden-yellow foliage and striking clusters of white flowers. This cultivar of the red elderberry offers a unique visual appeal, combining bold foliage with delicate flowers and bright red berries in late summer. Ideal for adding contrast and interest to gardens, it is perfect for both ornamental and wildlife-friendly spaces. Its fast growth and adaptability make it a valuable addition to mixed borders, hedges, and woodland gardens.

Why Grow Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold'?

Golden Foliage – The bright, golden-yellow leaves provide a striking contrast to darker plants and add a burst of colour to your garden from spring through autumn.

Showy Flowers – In late spring or early summer, 'Sutherland Gold' produces attractive white clusters of flowers, creating a soft contrast against the golden leaves.

Vibrant Berries – By late summer, it bears clusters of red berries that attract birds and wildlife, providing seasonal interest and nourishment for local fauna.

Wildlife-Friendly – The flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, while the red berries are a treat for birds, making it a great choice for a wildlife garden.

Fast-Growing and Low Maintenance – This cultivar grows quickly, providing structure and visual interest in your garden with minimal upkeep.

Height of Plant

Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold' typically grows to about 2–3 meters in height and spreads around 2–3 meters wide, making it suitable for medium to large gardens or as a specimen shrub in borders or woodland areas.

Where to Site Your Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold'

Its golden foliage and unique characteristics make it perfect for:

  • Woodland gardens, where it can complement other trees and shrubs with its vibrant contrast.

  • Mixed borders, adding both height and colour.

  • Wildlife gardens, attracting a variety of pollinators and birds with its flowers and berries.

  • Specimen planting or as a focal point, where its striking foliage can be appreciated.

  • Moist, well-drained soils, in both sunny and partially shaded spots.

How to Grow and Care for Your Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold'

Soil – Prefers moist, well-drained soil but is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including loamy, sandy, or slightly acidic soils.

Light – Grows best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun will bring out the most intense golden colour of the leaves, but it will tolerate some shade.

Watering – Requires regular watering, especially during dry spells, as it thrives in moist conditions. Once established, it becomes moderately drought-tolerant.

Maintenance:

  • Pruning – Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged wood. Regular pruning helps keep the shrub compact and encourages fresh growth.

  • Mulching – Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and provide some protection during colder weather.

  • Pest & Disease Resistance – Generally pest- and disease-resistant, but be aware of aphids or powdery mildew in humid conditions.

  • Cold Hardy – Hardy to about -15°C to -20°C, making it suitable for a variety of climates, including colder regions.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold' pairs beautifully with other bold or contrasting plants. Its golden foliage creates a striking contrast with darker-leaved plants like Cotinus or Heuchera. It also complements flowering shrubs such as Spiraea or Hydrangea, adding texture and colour. The bright berries look stunning when combined with other berry-bearing plants, creating a wildlife haven.

With its vibrant golden foliage, delicate white flowers, and red berries, Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold' brings a unique burst of colour and interest to the garden throughout the year. It’s perfect for adding structure, wildlife value, and visual contrast to your landscape, making it a standout choice for mixed borders, woodland gardens, and wildlife-friendly plantings.
