Robinia pseudoacacia 'Twisty Baby' (also sold as 'Lace Lady') is a captivating compact deciduous tree or large shrub celebrated for its dramatically contorted branches, curling stems, and delicate pinnate foliage. Where a conventional tree would be too large or too plain, this sculptural variety brings genuine character and year-round interest to smaller gardens, patios, and contemporary planting schemes alike.

Habit & appearance

Twisted form & foliage. 'Twisty Baby' is a slow-growing, compact cultivar of the False Acacia, prized above all for its corkscrew-curling branches and zig-zagging stems that create an almost artistic silhouette throughout every season. In spring, bright fresh-green pinnate leaves emerge, each leaflet softly rounded to give the canopy a lace-like, fern-textured quality. Through summer the full leafy crown remains airy and light, never dense enough to cast heavy shade. As autumn approaches the foliage fades to warm golden-yellow before dropping cleanly to reveal the plant's most theatrical attribute — a network of twisting, bare stems that look sculptural against a winter sky. Unlike the straight-stemmed species, even the smallest twigs maintain this distinctive curl, making the plant as visually interesting leafless as it is in full leaf.

Growing conditions

Position. Plant in a spot that receives full sun for the majority of the day. Good light levels encourage the tightest twisted growth and the most vibrant foliage colour. 'Twisty Baby' copes well in exposed, open positions and is tolerant of urban pollution, making it an excellent choice for courtyard gardens, roof terraces, and streetside planting.

Soil. This cultivar shares the species' well-known adaptability to challenging soils. It thrives in free-draining, moderately fertile ground and tolerates sandy, stony, or relatively poor soils once established. Avoid heavy, waterlogged clay, which can impede establishment and promote root problems. The plant is notably drought-tolerant once settled in, requiring little supplementary watering in most UK conditions.

Hardiness. Fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS H6), withstanding hard frosts without protection. Young plants in very exposed or frost-pocket sites benefit from a sheltered position in their first winter; established specimens need no winter protection.

Care

Pruning & maintenance. 'Twisty Baby' is a naturally low-maintenance plant that requires minimal intervention to look its best. If any shaping is desired, carry out light formative pruning in late winter or very early spring before growth resumes. Restrict pruning to removing dead, damaged, or crossing wood, and take care not to over-cut structural branches — the contorted framework is the plant's defining feature and should be preserved. Like all Robinias, this cultivar can sucker from the roots; remove any straight-stemmed basal growth promptly to maintain the ornamental character of the variety. Feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring and keep newly planted specimens well-watered through their first growing season until the root system is fully established. Container-grown plants should be repotted as needed and given a liquid feed through the growing season to sustain healthy foliage.
