Pear

Pear ‘Conference’ – Popular Dessert Pear

Pear ‘Conference’ is one of the most widely grown dessert pear varieties, valued for its long, tapering fruits with green skin that ripens to yellow, and its sweet, juicy, fine-textured flesh. Cropping reliably in autumn, the fruit is ideal for eating fresh, and can also be used for light cooking.

In spring, the tree produces masses of white blossom, providing ornamental value and supporting pollinators. A hardy and dependable variety, ‘Conference’ is partially self-fertile and well suited to gardens, orchards, and trained forms such as espaliers and cordons.

Why Grow Pear ‘Conference’?

  • Excellent Dessert Pear – Sweet and juicy flesh

  • Reliable Cropping – Heavy yields in autumn

  • Partially Self-Fertile – Good for smaller gardens

  • Spring Blossom – Decorative and pollinator friendly

  • Versatile Growth – Suitable for trained forms

Height and Spread

Final size depends on rootstock and training, typically 3–4m high with a spread of 3m when grown as a bush tree.

Growing Conditions

  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil

  • Aspect: Full sun in a sheltered position

  • Watering: Water regularly while establishing

Maintenance

Prune in winter to maintain shape and encourage fruiting. Thin fruit where crops are heavy to improve fruit size and quality.

Conclusion

Pear ‘Conference’ is a classic, dependable dessert pear offering excellent flavour, heavy cropping, and attractive spring blossom—an ideal choice for productive garden planting.
