Ilex meserveae ‘Heckenstar’

Robust, upright, and evergreen, Ilex meserveae ‘Heckenstar’ is a vigorous holly variety, ideal for hedging and screening. Its dense, glossy dark green leaves with softly spined edges create year-round structure, while small white flowers appear in spring.

As a male cultivar, ‘Heckenstar’ does not produce berries, but it is an excellent pollinator for female hollies, ensuring heavy crops of bright red berries in nearby plants. Hardy and resilient, it thrives in sun or partial shade, tolerating exposed and coastal conditions with ease.

Growing conditions:

  • Position: Full sun to partial shade

  • Soil: Fertile, moist, well-drained soil; tolerates a range of soil types

  • Aspect: Hardy across the UK; suitable for exposed and coastal gardens

  • Care: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and density

Key features:

  • Strong, upright male holly variety

  • Glossy dark green evergreen foliage

  • Pollinates female hollies for berry production

  • Perfect for hedges, screens, and structural planting

  • Height & Spread: 3–5 m tall, 1.5–2 m wide
