Philadelphus ‘Virginal’ – Timeless Elegance and Summer Scent
Few shrubs capture the romance of summer quite like Philadelphus ‘Virginal’. From late spring into early summer, its arching stems are draped in clusters of pure white, double blooms, each releasing a sweet, citrusy perfume that drifts across the garden. The abundance of flowers gives the whole shrub a cloud-like, bridal appearance, making it a stunning focal point in borders, informal hedges, or as a backdrop to more delicate planting.
A vigorous deciduous shrub, ‘Virginal’ typically reaches 2–3 metres in height and spread, making it ideal for providing structure and height in the garden. It thrives in most well-drained soils, in full sun or partial shade, and once established is wonderfully low maintenance – simply prune after flowering to keep its shape and encourage the next year’s blooms.
This variety is especially beautiful when planted where its fragrance can be fully enjoyed – by a seating area, along a garden path, or near an entrance. Hardy, reliable, and resistant to most pests, it’s a long-lived choice that will bring decades of summer scent and beauty.
