This elegant upright hornbeam forms a neat column of foliage, providing stately structure and year-round interest while occupying relatively little ground space.
Fresh green corrugated leaves emerge in spring, creating a vibrant display. Through summer the foliage provides dense green screening. In autumn, leaves turn golden yellow before fading to russet-brown. Much of the dried foliage is retained through winter, providing continued structure and interest.
Ideal for formal avenues, narrow spaces, driveways and boundary plantings. Excellent as a specimen tree in smaller gardens where space is limited. Can be pleached to create formal hedging or screens. Perfect for creating vertical accents in garden design.
Plant in full sun to partial shade in any reasonable soil, including heavy clay. Tolerates exposed positions well. Water during establishment. Minimal pruning required if grown as a specimen tree. Can be trimmed in late summer if grown as hedging. Very adaptable and low maintenance once established.
Combines beautifully with box hedging, lavenders and other formal planting. Underplant with spring bulbs such as daffodils and tulips. Works well alongside other architectural plants and in contemporary garden designs.
An invaluable tree for creating formal structure and year-round presence, particularly suited to smaller gardens and urban spaces where its narrow habit and adaptability make it exceptionally useful.
