Photinia Red Robin

Photinia × fraseri 'Red Robin' – Vibrant Evergreen Foliage with Year-Round Appeal

Photinia 'Red Robin' is a popular evergreen shrub known for its striking red new growth that matures to a glossy dark green. This versatile plant offers both ornamental beauty and practical structure, making it ideal for hedging, screening, or as a bold standalone shrub. Supplied here in a generous 18-litre pot, it's already well-established and ready to make an instant impact in the garden.

Whether clipped into a formal hedge or left to grow naturally, 'Red Robin' brings strong colour contrast, low-maintenance appeal, and year-round interest to borders, containers, or architectural plantings.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

Spring:

  • Bursts of bright red new leaves emerge, creating a fiery contrast against mature green foliage.

  • Small clusters of creamy-white flowers may appear in late spring, particularly on unpruned specimens.

Summer:

  • Foliage matures to a rich, glossy green.

  • Responds well to trimming to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth.

Autumn:

  • New red shoots may emerge again with autumn warmth, especially in milder climates.

  • Evergreen leaves maintain colour and form into the colder months.

Winter:

  • Holds glossy green foliage throughout winter, offering structure and screening even when other plants fade.

Structure & Form

  • Height: Can reach 3–4 m if left unpruned; easily maintained at 1.5–2.5 m

  • Spread: 2–3 m over time

  • Form: Upright, bushy, and dense – ideal for hedging or freestanding form

  • Foliage: Oval, leathery leaves with vivid red new growth maturing to dark green

  • Flowers: Small white flowers in late spring (if not trimmed)

Ideal for Landscaping Uses

  • Evergreen Hedging: A vibrant alternative to laurel or yew, with colourful seasonal interest

  • Screening & Privacy: Excellent as a tall backdrop or visual barrier

  • Structural Focal Point: Makes a bold feature in borders or large containers

  • Formal or Informal Gardens: Takes well to pruning for topiary, cones, or clean shapes

  • Coastal & Urban Gardens: Tolerant of pollution, pruning, and exposed sites

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Full sun to light shade (best colour in sun)

  • Soil: Moist but well-drained soil of most types; avoid waterlogging

  • Hardiness: RHS H5 – hardy in most of the UK

  • Watering: Water well in dry spells during first season

  • Pruning: Lightly trim in spring and late summer to encourage red regrowth and control size

  • Feeding: Mulch annually in spring; a general-purpose feed helps boost colour

Why Choose Photinia 'Red Robin' in an 18-Litre Pot?

  • Instant Impact: Supplied as a well-established plant, ready to transform your space

  • Bold Foliage Colour: Red new growth adds a dynamic splash of colour
