Looking for a pleached photinia tree with instant impact? Photinia ‘Red Robin’ is one of the best choices for year-round screening, thanks to its glossy evergreen foliage and the famous burst of red new growth in spring and summer. Trained on a raised frame, pleached Photinia creates a neat living screen that gives privacy without taking up lots of ground space.
This collection features established, full frames in a range of stem heights and frame sizes, ideal for boundaries, patios, driveways and garden zoning. For the full range of species, see our main Pleached Trees collection.
If you’re comparing evergreen pleached options, you may also like Portuguese Laurel pleached trees, Cherry Laurel pleached trees or Ilex pleached trees for different leaf shapes and overall finish.
When selecting a pleached Photinia, focus on clear stem height (the trunk height to the start of the frame) and frame size (the width/height of the trained head). A taller clear stem suits screening above fences or walls, while a larger frame gives more immediate coverage.
For a continuous screen, pleached trees are typically planted in a line with spacing guided by the frame width and how “solid” you want the screen to feel. If you tell us your run length and the look you’re aiming for, we can recommend sensible spacing.
Plant into well-drained soil and water thoroughly after planting. Dig a hole wider than the root ball, keeping the root collar at the same level as the surrounding soil. Firm in, stake if required, and water regularly during the first growing season.
The most common reason pleached trees struggle is inconsistent watering in the first season. Water deeply and regularly, especially in warm or windy weather, and don’t rely on light surface watering.
A spring feed and a mulch layer help retain moisture and support strong establishment. Keep mulch clear of the trunk to avoid rot.
Photinia can naturally show seasonal leaf changes, especially after cold, wind, or a flush of new growth. If you ever notice spotting or leaf drop, it doesn’t automatically mean the tree is failing — most established plants grow away strongly with the right conditions. Good airflow, correct watering, and removing heavily affected leaves usually makes a big difference.
