Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Grandiflora' (Paperbush) – Exceptional Winter Fragrance and Larger, Luminous Golden Blooms

Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Grandiflora' is a superior selection of the beloved Paperbush, prized for its notably larger flower clusters that illuminate the bare winter garden with warm, golden-yellow colour. Like the species, it blooms on naked stems in late winter to early spring, filling the surrounding air with a rich, honey-sweet fragrance at a time when the garden needs it most. A rounded, architecturally elegant deciduous shrub, 'Grandiflora' earns its place as a standout specimen throughout every season, following its spectacular winter display with bold, tropical-looking foliage that carries the planting through summer and into a soft golden autumn.

Habit & Appearance

Structure and winter display. 'Grandiflora' forms a well-branched, rounded shrub with smooth, pliable, cinnamon-brown stems that fork characteristically in threes. In late winter, before a single leaf appears, the stem tips are adorned with generously sized, globe-shaped clusters of tubular golden-yellow flowers — larger than those of the standard species — each releasing a captivating, sweet fragrance that carries well on cold air. The bare-stemmed silhouette studded with glowing blooms makes an unforgettable winter focal point.

Spring, summer and autumn interest. As the flowers fade, large, lance-shaped leaves of deep blue-green emerge, giving the shrub a lush, almost exotic presence through the warmer months. The foliage provides excellent textural contrast in mixed borders. In autumn, leaves turn soft shades of yellow before dropping to reveal the elegant branching structure once more, completing the year-round cycle of interest.

Growing Conditions

Position. Plant Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Grandiflora' in full sun to partial shade, in a sheltered position that protects the developing flower buds from harsh frost and desiccating winds. A south- or west-facing border, a woodland edge, or a position near a warm wall are all ideal. Siting the plant close to a path, doorway, or seating area allows the exceptional winter fragrance to be fully appreciated.

Soil. This cultivar performs best in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. It tolerates a range of soil types, including slightly acidic to neutral conditions, but dislikes waterlogging or very dry, impoverished ground. Incorporating generous amounts of well-rotted organic matter at planting will greatly benefit long-term establishment, moisture retention, and flowering performance.

Care

Watering and feeding. Water regularly during the first growing season to encourage deep, well-established roots. Once settled, 'Grandiflora' is reasonably resilient but will benefit from supplementary watering during prolonged dry spells, particularly in summer. Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and an abundant floral display the following winter. An annual mulch of well-rotted compost or bark around the base helps retain soil moisture and moderate root temperature.

Pruning. Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Grandiflora' requires very little pruning and generally maintains an attractive natural shape without intervention. If tidying is needed, prune lightly immediately after flowering has finished — this avoids removing the buds that form for the following season. Simply remove any dead, damaged, or crossing stems to keep the shrub open and well-ventilated. Hard pruning is not recommended and rarely necessary.

Garden Uses & Combinations

Versatile and rewarding. 'Grandiflora' is an outstanding specimen shrub for a sheltered mixed border or woodland garden, and works equally well as a focal point in a winter garden scheme. Its bold summer foliage pairs beautifully with shade-loving perennials such as hostas, ferns, and hellebores, while its winter blooms complement snowdrops, early crocus, and winter aconites planted at its feet. For a fragrant winter border, combine it with Daphne, Sarcococca, and witch hazel (Hamamelis) to create a succession of scent and colour from the darkest months through to early spring.
