Camellia 'Roger Hall' – A Striking Camellia with Bold Semi-Double Red Blooms

Camellia 'Roger Hall' is a handsome and vigorous evergreen shrub, prized for its bold, richly coloured flowers in a deep, velvety red. Blooming reliably from late winter through to spring, this striking variety makes an immediate and dramatic impression in the garden, delivering a generous and long-lasting display of large, eye-catching flowers at a time when colour is most valued and most welcome.

The blooms are semi-double in form, with broad, overlapping petals of a deep, intense crimson-red arranged with natural elegance around a prominent cluster of golden stamens. Their rich colouring is vivid and saturated, holding beautifully throughout the flowering season and creating a spectacular contrast against the plant's deep, lustrous evergreen foliage. The prominent stamens add an additional layer of character and warmth, lending each flower a certain wild, open-hearted charm quite distinct from the more formal double-flowered varieties.

'Roger Hall' develops into an upright and bushy shrub of strong, vigorous constitution, making it an outstanding choice for sheltered borders, woodland gardens, and acid-loving planting schemes where bold colour and reliable performance are equally desirable. Its robust habit and handsome proportions also make it well suited to large containers, where its vivid red blooms can be appreciated at close range on spacious patios and in walled courtyard gardens.

Beyond its magnificent seasonal flowering, the dense, glossy evergreen canopy contributes valuable year-round structure and a rich, dark backdrop for shade-loving companion plants throughout the garden. Hardy, long-lived, and increasingly floriferous as it matures, 'Roger Hall' is a deeply rewarding camellia that grows more impressive and more generous with each passing season.

Like all camellias, 'Roger Hall' thrives in a sheltered position in partial or dappled shade, with protection from cold, drying winds and early morning winter sun, which can damage newly opened blooms on frosty mornings. It performs best in moist, humus-rich, well-drained, acidic soil and benefits greatly from an annual mulch of composted bark or leaf mould to retain moisture and nourish the roots.

Bold, dramatic, and deeply satisfying, Camellia 'Roger Hall' is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a vigorous, free-flowering camellia with richly coloured blooms and outstanding year-round garden presence.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

Winter

Plump, well-developed flower buds sit prominently against the deep glossy evergreen foliage, building anticipation for the vivid display ahead.

Late Winter–Spring

Large, bold semi-double flowers open in deep crimson-red, their golden stamens glowing at the centre of each bloom and creating a spectacular and prolonged seasonal display.

Summer

Deep, lustrous evergreen leaves provide rich structure and a handsome, polished green presence throughout the growing season.

Autumn

The dense, attractive evergreen canopy remains neat and weed-suppressing while new flower buds quietly develop for the following season's display.

Planting & Care Guide

Position: Partial shade or dappled shade; shelter from cold, drying winds and avoid early morning sun on frost-touched buds and blooms. A west- or north-facing sheltered wall or fence is ideal.

Soil: Moist, humus-rich, acidic, well-drained soil. Mulch annually with composted bark or leaf mould to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and gently feed the roots.

Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout most of the UK in a sheltered position, though young plants benefit from protection during prolonged hard frosts.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and prolonged dry spells. Use collected rainwater where tap water is hard or alkaline, as camellias are sensitive to lime.

Feeding: Apply a specialist ericaceous fertiliser in spring and again in early summer to support healthy growth and encourage a generous flowering display the following season.
