Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer' is a beautiful, fast-growing ornamental pear tree that offers stunning white flowers in spring, glossy green leaves in summer, and vibrant autumn foliage. Its narrow, pyramidal shape makes it ideal for urban gardens and limited spaces. With minimal maintenance required and a high resistance to many pests and diseases, it is a versatile and attractive choice for various landscapes.

  • Flowers: Produces abundant clusters of white flowers. Blooms in spring, typically in March to April, often before the leaves emerge, creating a beautiful display of blossoms. The flowers are slightly fragrant, attracting bees and other pollinators.
  • Foliage: The leaves are glossy, dark green, and have a lanceolate shape, providing a lush canopy during the growing season.  In fall, the foliage turns to vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red, providing excellent seasonal color before dropping.
  • Size: A medium-sized tree, typically reaching heights of 8-12 meters (26-39 feet) with a spread of about 4-8 meters (13-26 feet).
  • Shape: It has a narrow, pyramidal form, making it suitable for tight spaces and urban environments.
  • Bark: is smooth and dark gray-brown, developing a rough texture with age. It adds winter interest to the landscape
  • Produces small, hard, inedible fruits that are generally less noticeable but can attract birds, making it beneficial for wildlife.

Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer' prefers full sun for optimal growth and flowering. Thrives in a range of well-drained soils, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and keeps the roots cool. Pruning is best done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins, focusing on removing dead or crossing branches to maintain structure. Avoid heavy pruning as it can reduce flowering potential.

Its striking shape and seasonal interest make it an excellent focal point in gardens and parks. Often used in formal avenues or rows, providing a dramatic seasonal display as the flowers bloom.
