Acer × freemanii – Strength and Fiery Colour Combined
Acer × freemanii, known as Freeman’s Maple, is a naturally occurring hybrid between the Red Maple (Acer rubrum) and the Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum). This tree blends the best of both parents: rapid growth and adaptability from Silver Maple, and stunning scarlet autumn colour from Red Maple.
In spring, fresh green leaves emerge, casting dense shade through summer. As autumn approaches, the tree bursts into a blaze of fiery red, orange, and scarlet tones, often among the brightest displays in the landscape. Its upright form, resilience, and reliable colour make it a favourite for larger gardens, parks, and urban plantings.
Why Choose Acer × freemanii?
Brilliant Autumn Colour – Fiery red-orange foliage that rivals the best maples.
Fast Growing – Quickly establishes as a shade or feature tree.
Resilient – Hardy, adaptable to a wide range of soils, and tolerant of urban conditions.
Strong Structure – More storm-resistant than Silver Maple thanks to hybrid vigour.
Planting & Care Guide
Position: Full sun for the best autumn colour; tolerates partial shade.
Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil, but adapts to clay, loam, or sandy soils.
Watering: Regular watering when young; once established, moderately drought-tolerant.
Feeding: Mulch annually in spring to conserve moisture and enrich the soil.
Pruning: Best done in late winter to maintain structure and remove weak wood.
