Magnolia 'Genie' – A Compact, Fragrant Tree with Stunning Deep Purple Blooms
Magnolia 'Genie' is a small, deciduous tree known for its elegant, deep purple-pink flowers that bloom in early spring. Reaching a height of 3-3.5 meters with a spread of 2.5 meters, this compact magnolia is perfect for smaller gardens or as a focal point in a mixed border. The large, goblet-shaped flowers bloom before the tree's foliage emerges, creating a striking early-season display.
The flowers of Magnolia 'Genie' are deep purple with pink undertones, creating a rich, dramatic contrast against the dark green foliage. They are not only visually stunning but also emit a sweet, fragrant scent, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. As the tree matures, it develops a dense, rounded crown, making it an attractive, low-maintenance option for gardeners who want a magnolia tree with a smaller stature without sacrificing beauty.

Planting & Care Guide
Position: Magnolia 'Genie' prefers full sun to partial shade. For the best blooms and vibrant foliage, plant it in a sunny location where it can receive at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. While it can tolerate some shade, flowering may not be as abundant in lower light conditions.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil, rich in organic matter. It thrives in loamy, moist soil but can tolerate a variety of soil types as long as it’s well-draining. Avoid heavy clay soils that retain excessive moisture.
Watering: Water regularly when newly planted to ensure strong root development. Once established, Magnolia 'Genie' is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering during dry spells to maintain healthy growth and vibrant blooms.
Maintenance:
Pruning is minimal for Magnolia 'Genie', but light pruning after flowering can help maintain the tree’s shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as this may impact flowering the following season.
Mulching around the base of the tree helps to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Apply a layer of mulch in early spring to keep the roots cool and protected from temperature fluctuations.
Fertilizing is generally unnecessary unless the tree is planted in nutrient-poor soil. A light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring can encourage healthy growth and enhance bloom production.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Magnolia 'Genie' pairs beautifully with other spring-flowering plants, such as Forsythia, Corylopsis (Buttercup Winterhazel), or Primula (Primrose), where the purple-pink blooms of the magnolia contrast beautifully with their bright yellow or white flowers. It also complements other flowering shrubs like Azalea, Rhododendron, and Pieris, where the early-season blooms provide additional color and texture. For a more naturalistic look, pair it with perennial companions like Astilbe, Hostas, or Daylilies, which provide foliage contrast and fill out the garden as the magnolia’s blooms fade.
