Vinca minor ‘Gertrude Jekyll’
Bright, pure, and endlessly useful, Vinca minor ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ is a classic evergreen groundcover with a twist. Instead of the traditional periwinkle-blue, this charming variety produces a profusion of crisp white flowers, creating a fresh, luminous effect in shady corners where light is often in short supply.
The star-shaped blooms appear from spring right through summer and will often return in autumn, catching the eye against a backdrop of glossy green foliage. The effect is simple but striking – clean white flowers gleaming above neat evergreen leaves, brightening woodland edges, banks, and underplantings.
Like all vincas, ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ is as practical as it is pretty. Its trailing stems root as they spread, forming a dense, weed-suppressing carpet that’s invaluable in both sun and shade. It’s particularly effective beneath trees and shrubs, where it weaves a soft green ground layer, or along slopes and banks, where its evergreen foliage helps bind the soil and prevent erosion. Once established, it’s low-maintenance and highly resilient, coping happily with both damp shade and drier soils.
Design-wise, this variety is especially versatile. Its fresh white flowers combine effortlessly with other shade-loving plants, from hellebores and ferns to hostas and spring bulbs. Use it to highlight darker foliage, to add brightness at the base of shrubs, or to soften the transition between beds and paths. With its year-round foliage and long flowering season, it’s one of those plants that quietly supports a garden’s structure while providing moments of brilliance throughout the year.
