Euonymus japonicus ‘Bravo’ – Elegant, Variegated Evergreen for Year-Round Interest

Euonymus japonicus ‘Bravo’ is a versatile, evergreen shrub prized for its bold variegated foliage and compact, bushy form. Its striking green leaves with creamy-yellow margins provide vibrant contrast throughout the year, making it an excellent choice for formal gardens, hedging, borders, and container planting. Hardy and easy to maintain, this resilient shrub thrives in a variety of conditions, offering long-lasting structure and colour.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

In spring, new bright green foliage emerges, edged with creamy-yellow tones that intensify in sunlight. Throughout summer, its dense, glossy leaves create a rich, textural backdrop for seasonal plants. In autumn, the shrub retains its vibrant variegated appearance, maintaining interest even as other plants fade. During winter, its evergreen nature ensures structure and colour, making it a reliable feature in any garden.

Structure & Form

Euonymus japonicus ‘Bravo’ forms a dense, upright shrub, reaching 1.5–2m in height with a spread of 1–1.5m. Its glossy, variegated foliage consists of ovate leaves with bold, creamy-white margins, creating a striking contrast. Naturally compact and bushy, it responds well to pruning, making it perfect for shaping, hedging, and topiary.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

This eye-catching Euonymus is ideal for:

  • Formal gardens, adding structure and contrast.

  • Low hedging & borders, providing year-round definition.

  • Container planting, brightening patios, balconies, and entrances.

  • Coastal & urban gardens, as it tolerates salt, wind, and pollution.

  • Mixed shrub planting, complementing evergreens and seasonal flowers.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, though variegation is best in sunnier spots.

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil, tolerating a range of conditions including dry and coastal soils.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy, resistant to frost, pollution, and coastal exposure.

  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance; requires only occasional pruning to maintain shape and density. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, needing minimal watering.

Why Choose Euonymus japonicus ‘Bravo’?

  • Bold, variegated foliage, providing year-round colour and contrast.

  • Evergreen & easy-care, offering structure with minimal upkeep.

  • Hardy & adaptable, thriving in sun, shade, and tough conditions.

  • Perfect for hedging & borders, creating a dense, structured look.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Euonymus japonicus ‘Bravo’ pairs beautifully with:

  • Buxus (Box) & Taxus (Yew) for structured, formal planting.

  • Lavender & Hebes for a Mediterranean-inspired contrast.

  • Hydrangeas & Camellias for seasonal colour alongside its evergreen form.

  • Phormium & Grasses for a contemporary, textural display.

With its vibrant variegation, hardy nature, and year-round appeal, Euonymus japonicus ‘Bravo’ is a fantastic choice for adding texture, brightness, and structure to any garden.
