Lavender shrubs (Lavandula) are renowned for their aromatic foliage and vibrant, calming flowers. These evergreen plants add elegance and charm to any garden or landscape, making them a favourite among gardeners.
Lavender shrubs thrive in well-drained soils with a neutral to alkaline pH. They prefer full sun exposure, ideally receiving at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily. Lavender can tolerate poor soil conditions and is resistant to drought once established. To enhance growth, incorporate a light application of lime into the soil if it is too acidic.
Lavender shrubs typically reach heights of 30-60 cm, with a similar spread. They grow at a moderate rate, making them easy to maintain and shape. Regular pruning helps maintain their compact form and encourages lush flowering.
Lavender shrubs are relatively low maintenance but benefit from regular care. Pruning is essential to maintain their shape and health. Cut back the plants after flowering, usually in late summer or early autumn, to remove spent blooms and prevent woody growth.
Water lavender perennials regularly during dry periods while allowing the soil to dry out between waterings and reduce watering once the plants are established.
Prune lavender perennials in late summer after flowering to maintain their shape and prevent woody growth.
Use a balanced fertiliser or organic matter to support growth and flowering.
Yellowing leaves or poor growth can indicate stress due to overwatering or poor soil drainage.
Look for white, powdery spots on leaves. Improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering.
Ensure well-drained soil to prevent this issue. Avoid waterlogging.
In colder climates, protect lavender from frost by mulching or covering it with fleece.
