Pros:

  1. Cost-Effective: Bare root plants are generally cheaper than potted plants.
  2. Variety: Greater selection of species available.
  3. Establishment: Often establish quickly in the garden.

Cons:

  1. Timing: Must be planted during the dormant season (late autumn to early spring).
  2. Initial Care: Require careful handling and timely planting.

Preparation for Planting:

  1. Soak Roots: Immerse the roots in water for a few hours before planting to rehydrate them.
  2. Inspect: Trim any damaged roots with clean, sharp scissors.
  3. Dig Hole: Ensure the hole is wide enough to spread roots out without bending them.
  4. Consider Cutting back: Cutting back by up to 1/3, especially on taller plants will reduce possible losses and improve plant establishment.

Planting Process:

  1. Plant Depth: Plant at the same depth they were grown in the nursery, indicated by the soil mark on the stem.
  2. Fill Hole: Backfill with soil, ensuring no air pockets around the roots.
  3. Water: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.

Possibility of Losses:

  • Adjustment Period: Some plants may not survive the transition due to transplant shock or poor initial care.
  • Mitigation: Proper planting techniques and aftercare, like regular watering and mulching, can reduce losses.

Aftercare Tips:

  1. Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the establishment period.
  2. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  3. Protection: Protect young plants from extreme weather and pests.

Bare root planting is a straightforward, economical way to enhance your garden, provided you follow these essential steps to ensure successful establishment.

Cherry Laurel, or Prunus laurocerasus, is an evergreen hedge renowned for its dense, glossy dark green foliage. With its rapid growth, lush cover, and minimal maintenance needs, Cherry Laurel is an excellent choice for a year-round hedge that enhances any garden.

Where Should I Site My Cherry Laurel Hedging?

Spring/autumn are ideal periods for planting, however, pot-grown laurels can be done all year. Depending on when you want to plant your new hedge, why not invest in a leaky hose to take the pressure off watering during hot weather? When planting, dig a hole that is both deep and wide enough for the root ball. Ensure that the root collar (where the trunk meets the roots) remains above the soil level. Once the plant is positioned, fill the hole with soil and gently tamp it down to remove any air pockets.

Cherry Laurels are adaptable to a variety of conditions, including full sun or partial shade and different soil types, making them suitable for many garden settings.

Watering:

Once established, Cherry Laurel requires minimal maintenance. During the establishment phase, water regularly during dry spells around 2-3 times a week, particularly in summer. However, be cautious not to overwater, as Cherry Laurel does not tolerate waterlogged soil.

Water the plant thoroughly to settle the soil and ensure the roots receive adequate moisture. Applying a 2–3-inch layer of mulch around the base will help regulate soil temperature and support healthy growth.

Growth & Pruning:

Spring/autumn are ideal periods for planting, however pot grown laurels can be done all year round. Depending on when you do want to plant, why not invest in a leaky hose to take the pressure off watering during hot weather? Trim back to maintain the desired shape and size, using sharp, clean shears. Avoid removing more than one-third of the plant's growth each year to ensure healthy development.

Cherry Laurels can grow up to 60 cm per year, making them a fast-growing option for creating a privacy hedge quickly. Due to their rapid growth, they may require trimming several times a year.

Characteristics:

  • Glossy Green Foliage
  • Grows up to 60cm Per Year around 2ft
  • White Flowers spring/summer
  • Red/black berries in Autumn/winter
  • Winter Hardy
  • Bare Root (Pre-order for November)
