Juniperus scopulorum 'Blue Arrow' – A Tall, Upright Evergreen with Stunning Blue Foliage
Juniperus scopulorum 'Blue Arrow', commonly known as Blue Arrow Rocky Mountain Juniper, is a striking, tall, columnar evergreen that features striking blue-gray foliage. This narrow, upright variety reaches a height of 3 meters with a spread of only 60cm making it an ideal choice for small spaces, vertical accents, or narrow garden areas. The dense, scale-like needles display a silvery-blue hue that provides year-round interest and a cool-toned contrast to the surrounding plants.
This juniper is perfect for adding vertical interest to the landscape, whether as a standalone specimen, a privacy screen, or part of a modern garden design. Juniperus scopulorum 'Blue Arrow' is also highly adaptable to a variety of growing conditions. It thrives in full sun, is drought-tolerant once established, and is resistant to wind and cold, making it a hardy choice for many climates. Its columnar form and rich blue foliage provide texture, structure, and year-round beauty in the garden.
Why Grow Juniperus scopulorum 'Blue Arrow'?
Striking Columnar Shape – The tall, narrow growth habit makes it an excellent choice for small spaces, narrow garden beds, or as a vertical accent in the landscape.
Unique Blue Foliage – The silvery-blue foliage provides a cool-toned contrast to the surrounding plants and remains vibrant throughout the year, adding visual interest in all seasons.
Hardy & Drought-Tolerant – Juniperus scopulorum 'Blue Arrow' is highly adaptable and can withstand various soil types, wind, and cold temperatures once established. It is also drought-tolerant, requiring minimal watering once mature.
Low Maintenance – This resilient juniper requires little attention once established, making it an ideal choice for gardeners looking for a low-maintenance, easy-to-grow plant with a strong architectural presence.
Evergreen Appeal – The foliage retains its color year-round, ensuring that the plant continues to provide structure and interest in winter months when other plants may be dormant.
Planting & Care Guide
Position: Prefers full sun, where the blue foliage will be most vibrant. It can tolerate light to moderate shade, but for optimal color and growth, planting in a sunny spot is ideal.
Soil: Thrives in well-drained soil, including sandy, loamy, or rocky soil. It is adaptable to a variety of soil types but should not be planted in waterlogged areas. Well-drained soil ensures healthy root development.
Watering: Water regularly when newly planted to help establish strong roots. Once established, Juniperus scopulorum 'Blue Arrow' is highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering, making it a great choice for low-water gardens.
Maintenance:
Pruning is typically minimal. However, light shaping or removal of any dead or damaged branches can be done in early spring to maintain its neat, columnar form. Avoid heavy pruning, as this may disrupt the natural shape.
Mulching around the base of the plant can help conserve moisture, stabilize soil temperature, and prevent weeds. Apply mulch in the spring or fall for additional protection during winter months.
Fertilizing is generally not necessary. If desired, a light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring can support growth, particularly in nutrient-poor soils.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Juniperus scopulorum 'Blue Arrow' pairs beautifully with other upright, vertical plants like Echinacea (Coneflower), Rudbeckia (Black-eyed Susan), or Lobelia (Lobelia), where its cool blue foliage contrasts nicely with the warmer tones of flowers. It also complements other evergreen plants, such as Picea (Spruce) or Pinus (Pine), creating a harmonious, year-round display of texture and color. For a more modern look, combine it with ornamental grasses such as Festuca (Fescue) or Miscanthus (Maiden Grass), which add a delicate, flowing contrast to its rigid, columnar form. The narrow shape of Blue Arrow also makes it an excellent choice for narrow garden beds, as a privacy screen, or as a focal point in contemporary landscaping designs.
