Hydrangea macrophylla Blue – Classic Blue Mophead Hydrangea for Summer Colour
Hydrangea macrophylla Blue is a timeless garden favourite, producing large rounded flower heads in rich shades of blue from summer into early autumn. The bold mophead blooms create a strong visual impact, bringing colour and softness to borders and garden spaces.
The intensity of the blue colour can vary depending on soil conditions, with acidic soils producing the deepest blue tones. The flowers are set against a backdrop of lush green foliage, creating a full and vibrant shrub throughout the growing season.
With its naturally bushy, compact habit, this hydrangea is ideal for borders, containers, and shaded areas of the garden. It is particularly effective in cottage-style planting schemes or as a feature shrub where its large blooms can be appreciated up close.
Thriving in sun or partial shade, Hydrangea macrophylla prefers moist, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry spells. As it flowers on old wood, pruning should be kept to a minimum—simply removing spent flower heads and any dead stems.
Reliable, colourful, and easy to grow, Hydrangea macrophylla Blue is an excellent choice for adding long-lasting summer interest to UK gardens.
