Hydrangea Annabelle

Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' – Elegant, Hardy & Versatile Shrub with Classic White Blooms

Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' is a timeless and hardy deciduous shrub celebrated for its large, snow-white blooms and graceful, rounded form. This iconic hydrangea variety is known for its ability to produce an abundance of large flower clusters, creating a stunning visual impact in gardens. Whether planted as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, or as part of a woodland garden, Annabelle brings elegance, beauty, and texture to any landscape, thriving in both sunny and shaded areas.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

  • Spring: New foliage emerges in early spring, providing a vibrant green backdrop that sets the stage for the spectacular summer blooms.
  • Summer: Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' reaches its full glory with large, round flower heads made up of pure white blooms that last for weeks, adding a touch of elegance and freshness to the garden.
  • Autumn: As the season changes, the foliage gradually turns yellow before dropping, offering a soft transition to the cooler months.
  • Winter: The plant dies back during the winter but remains a hardy perennial that reemerges each spring with fresh growth and stunning blooms.

Structure & Form

  • Height: Grows to a height of approximately 150-250cm (1.5–2.5 meters), creating a compact yet visually striking shrub that works well in smaller gardens or as a border plant.
  • Spread: The shrub spreads up to 150-250cm (1.5–2.5 meters) forming a dense, rounded mound of foliage and blooms, perfect for filling spaces and adding fullness to the landscape.
  • Foliage: Known for its ovate, dark green leaves that provide a rich backdrop to the large white blooms during the summer months.
  • Flowers: Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' produces large, globe-like flower clusters, about 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) in diameter, filled with pure white blooms. These blooms are eye-catching and provide excellent visual interest throughout the blooming season.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Mixed Borders: A great addition to mixed borders, where its rounded form and large white blooms create a striking focal point amidst other plants.
  • Specimen Shrub: Works beautifully as a standalone specimen shrub, offering a striking display of blooms and texture in garden spaces.
  • Shaded or Woodland Gardens: Perfect for shaded or woodland garden settings, where Annabelle can thrive under tree canopies or in partial sunlight.
  • Container Planting: Suitable for planting in large containers or patio pots, where its beautiful white blooms can be showcased in more compact spaces.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Prefers partial to full sun but can tolerate some shade, especially in hotter climates where some afternoon shade is beneficial.
  • Soil: Enjoys moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is ideal for Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle'.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy, making it suitable for a wide range of climates and capable of withstanding colder winters.
  • Maintenance: This hydrangea is low-maintenance and easy to care for. Occasional pruning after flowering helps maintain the shrub’s shape and encourages strong growth for the following season. Deadheading spent blooms may also encourage a tidier appearance and enhance the plant’s overall performance.
