Hornbeam Root Ball Hedging Pre-Orders Now Open

Premium Field-Grown Hornbeam Hedging – Available October to March

Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is one of the finest native hedging plants for creating a dense, formal hedge with year-round structure. Often compared to Beech, Hornbeam is particularly suited to heavier soils and retains many of its copper-brown leaves throughout winter, providing valuable screening even when dormant.

Our root ball Hornbeam is field-grown for several years before being carefully lifted with an intact ball of soil during the dormant season. This provides larger, more established plants that offer immediate impact at a significantly lower cost than equivalent container-grown specimens.

Available exclusively from October to March, root ball Hornbeam is perfect for formal gardens, country estates and large landscaping projects.

Why Pre-Order Your Hornbeam Hedging?

Our Hornbeam is lifted fresh from the field each autumn, and the best specimens are always reserved first.

By pre-ordering now, you'll benefit from:

  • ✔ Priority access to freshly lifted field-grown stock
  • ✔ The widest choice of sizes
  • ✔ Guaranteed availability for autumn planting
  • ✔ Exclusive pre-order offers before the season begins

Larger grades are produced in limited quantities and often sell out early.

Why Choose Root Ball Hornbeam?

Field-grown Hornbeam develops naturally over several years, producing a dense framework of branches and a strong fibrous root system before lifting.

Compared with large pot-grown plants, root ball Hornbeam offers:

  • Larger plants for considerably less money
  • Excellent value for instant hedging
  • Freshly lifted stock
  • Strong field-grown root systems
  • Outstanding establishment when planted correctly

Why Choose Hornbeam Hedging?

Hornbeam is one of Britain's most versatile hedging plants and is particularly popular where a formal appearance is required.

Its benefits include:

  • Attractive bright green foliage in spring and summer
  • Golden-yellow autumn colour
  • Retains much of its copper-brown foliage through winter
  • Excellent screening throughout the year
  • Extremely hardy and long-lived
  • Tolerates heavier clay soils better than Beech
  • Easy to clip into neat, formal hedges
  • Excellent for wildlife

Although deciduous, established Hornbeam often holds onto much of its dried winter foliage until fresh growth emerges in spring.

Hornbeam vs Beech

Hornbeam and Beech are often compared, but each has its strengths.

Hornbeam

  • Better suited to heavy clay soils
  • More tolerant of wet conditions
  • Bright green summer foliage
  • Golden autumn colour
  • Excellent winter leaf retention

Beech

  • Prefers lighter, well-drained soils
  • Rich green foliage
  • Attractive copper autumn colour
  • Classic formal appearance

If your garden has clay or heavier ground, Hornbeam is often the better choice.

Planting Root Ball Hornbeam

Root ball Hornbeam should be planted as soon as possible after delivery.

1. Prepare the Ground

Dig a trench or individual planting holes wider than each rootball and loosen the surrounding soil.

2. Position Correctly

Place the rootball so the top sits level with the surrounding ground. Avoid planting too deeply.

3. Leave the Hessian On

Do not remove the hessian or wire basket. They hold the rootball together during planting and naturally decompose over time while allowing roots to grow through.

4. Backfill

Refill using the excavated soil, gently firm around the rootball and water thoroughly.

Soil and Position

Hornbeam is exceptionally adaptable and performs well in:

  • Clay soils
  • Loam
  • Chalk
  • Moist but well-drained soils

It thrives in:

  • Full sun
  • Partial shade
  • Exposed locations
  • Sheltered gardens

Hornbeam is one of the best hedging plants for gardens with heavier soils.

Aftercare

Successful establishment depends on good aftercare during the first growing season.

We recommend:

  • Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
  • Continue deep watering throughout the first spring and summer during dry weather.
  • Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture.
  • Keep grass and weeds clear of the root zone.
  • Stake larger specimens if required to prevent wind rock.

Pruning Hornbeam Hedging

Hornbeam responds extremely well to clipping and creates one of the finest formal hedges.

For best results:

  • Carry out the main trim in late summer.
  • Young hedges may benefit from a light formative trim during early summer.
  • Regular pruning encourages dense growth from the base upwards.

Hornbeam Root Ball Hedging FAQs

When is root ball Hornbeam available?

Root ball Hornbeam is available from October through to March, while plants remain dormant.

Is Hornbeam better than Beech?

Both make outstanding hedges. However, Hornbeam generally performs better on heavier clay soils and in areas prone to wetter conditions.

Should I remove the hessian?

No. Leave the hessian and any wire basket in place. They naturally break down over time while protecting the rootball during planting.

Can I plant Hornbeam in winter?

Yes. Winter is the ideal planting period provided the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.

Is root ball Hornbeam guaranteed?

Root ball plants are freshly lifted from the field and depend on correct planting and aftercare for successful establishment. As factors such as weather, soil conditions and watering are outside our control, root ball hedging is supplied without guarantee.

Hornbeam is one of the finest choices for creating a dense, elegant hedge that performs exceptionally well in a wide range of soil conditions. Pre-order now to secure the freshest field-grown stock, enjoy the widest choice of sizes and guarantee availability when lifting begins in October.

Whether you're planting a formal garden hedge, a countryside boundary or a large landscaping project, our premium root ball Hornbeam offers outstanding value, rapid establishment and year-round beauty.
